I want to upgrade my EVO 4G to the latest EVO 4G Stock ROM. I've been reading this and that about versions and bricking and permanent unrooting if upgrading through ota.

So I figure if someone could just help me know the easiest way to upgrade everything about my currently rooted EVO 4G. I've already factory reset but I'm still rooted.

I don't think you're fully rooted. You still have S-ON, which needs to be S-OFF. What did you use to root?

I used unrEVOked. I can't remember the version number but it was about 6-8 months ago probably. I know I'm somewhat rooted. Maybe there's a second process that I didn't do after unrEVOking. Also, I did a factory reset and then tried to apply the latest sprint ota updates. I got the triangle exclamation point android icon about halfway through the update process. rebooted and it went back to normal and is wanting me to install the update...but i either need to unroot first or just flash the latest rom?

what is your hboot now after you tried the update?

try running unrevoked again. it should be able to get s-off again. sometimes unrevoked needs to run a few times before s-off happens.

do not do the ota. it could brick your phone or leave it in a weird state. or worse leave you s-on(which you have) but with a newer hboot that you can't root yet.

yes he could. same thing really. only difference is that unrevoked forever saves the s-off flag onto the nv radios. so even if you accept an ota like gingerbread you can still keep s-off and restore a custom recovery and flash away like normal. so yes he could.

Thanks so far guys, I've edited my first post to reflect the fact that I just flashed unrevoked forever file. (it says S-OFF now).

I guess my main question is, how do I get gingerbread. How do I get current stock EVO 4G.

Also, I was talking to a friend earlier, can I use my 4G with cyanogen or whatever the most famous custom roms are out there? Is there a famous custom HTC rom that has sens ui?

    thanks

you can start by reading this:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/347533-official-gingerbread-2-3-rooted-evo-4g.html. to get updated all you would have to do is just flash a gingerbread rom.

there is a stock gingerbread rom that you could flash. but i would try mikg to start. the stock gingerbread is to plain. plus with mikg you get elements of sense 2.1 and sense 3.0 which our evo will never get.

So I've updated the stats in my original post. I'd like to ask you, should I update HBOOT? In addition to the above settings apparently I'm running ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.0.1. Is this the most popular or should I use something else/upgrade it?

no i would not mess with the hboots. that is anther way you could brick your phone if things go wrong. your hboot is older but it should be fine.

as far as recovery goes, i would recommend that you use amon ra2.3, you can get it here:Free File Hosting Made Simple - MediaFire
    1.download it
2.change the name by deleting all but the PC36IMG part of the name. whatever you do do not add a .zip to the name as windows hides extensions.
3.put the file on the root(no folders)
4.power off (you may have to uncheck fastboot. settings/power/fastboot) then press and hold power+vol down
5.hboot should scan for the file. select yes to update
6.select no when asked to reboot
7.make a nandroid by selecting "backup and restore' and select backup
    8.reboot

    now you have amon ra2.3
