How do you get more android smiley icons?

Is there a way to get more android smiley icons rather than just the ones that come with the phone. Can you install an app or is there a way to punch in symbols to get different android smiley guys.

You do realize that the emoticons (smiley's) only display on your phone? Plain text is sent in messaging apps and will display however the recipient is configured.

To change the stock smiley's you need to be rooted and mess around with stuff better left un-messed. You can get different ones in different text apps like Handcent or ChompSMS. Check with them to see if additional icon packs are available.
