Root How to install a rom on optimus v? nothing ive read is working! help a noob?

hello, this is my first post here but i know that there are a bunch of posts on doing this very thing (rom installation on a optimus v), but i either dont understand what is being said on those threads, or they dont apply to me.

this is as far as i have gotten:

i have a rooted optimus v it was a christmas phone from 2 months ago. i have always wanted to overclock it but i didnt want to get into dangersous command line style procedures. i used gingerbreak to do it and it worked perfectly. i then installed setcpu and while it can underclock the cpu, it's max is the stock 600mhz speed. i want to be able to overclock it past that, not too far as to really stress it, but to get a slight edge. another cpu controller program was the same story.

supposing that i needed to do a custom rom install, i started to do a bit of research on it. long story short i tried rom manager. i told it to "backup current rom" i dont think it did because it did something else and instaled some kind of file somewhere... i think it may be something like clockwork or something like that.

when it finished that install, it restarted fine. i wanted to see if it was some kind of recovery file, and turned the phone off,and then did the power, home, and volume down thing. it flashed the lg logo as normal, and then went to a backlit black screen, where i thought it was stuck. trying everything i could, "doubleclicking" the power button turned the phone off. i let it normally start up, and it did fine (whew). thats where i am at now.

i want to be able to install a custom rom (like cyanogen 7) but i dont know what to do, and how to prepare the phone (backup roms?) to prepare for it. my experience and knowledge is low compared to you guys but is definately above the average joe. im also a fast learner.

ps i have done the titanium backup thing

anyone know what i can do?

Go to the All Things Root subforum, and read the stickied thread The Truth About ROM Manager. You should have done that before trying to use it.

acutally, when i was reading the other threads on rooting this phone, i had come across a post saying to do just that. i went to that page and it really did not make any clear sense as to why to not use it. it said some things that might happen, and some things that do in fact work. this, along with some threads that say that it does work, compelled me to try it anyways.

shoot, it might be working, and im just not using it correctly.

anyway, it did NOT break my phone. i am sitting here playing angry birds on the phone while waiting for replies haha.

so, how would YOU do it then?

ok i have read those two linked pages you said, and followed links from those pages to whatever seems relevent. i feel like i am atarting to get a small feel for what to do to install a custom rom on the optimus v.

but i am not where i feel like i can do it by myself.

what do you actually need to do to install a custom rom? how is it done?

i try to read the other threads that say how to do it, but i just dont follow. the way it is writen in the language to another person is throwing me off... so know i have genuinely tried to do this without help

so, can you please explain to me how to install a rom on the OP V?

Tell me what you have done so far. What you have downloaded on your sd card. What screen do you have(most important).
What are you looking to be able to do with a custom ROM(I'll try to match your need to the ROM)

first off, thanks for being willing to help me with this.

at the top of the thread i have written my "story so far". the phone is rooted properly, and root apps work fine. i tried using rom manager, and it installed some kind of "clockwork mod and backup" thing/filder to my sd card. when i tried to see if what it had done was put an extra option in the "phone's bios menu" (the power, volume down, home button screen), it started to do it like normal. it had flashed the lg logo for like 2 seconds as normal and went to a backlit black screen as normal. what was normal was that it didnt go to a menu, it stayed black. i googled around, fearing the worst, and found that i can turn it off from there by "doubleclicking" the power/lock button on the top. it worked. i booted the phone normally and it was perfectly fine. the phone functoions as normal. since then i have uninstalled the rom manager, and deleted the file that it had made in my sd card when i tried to get it to backup whatever it was backing up.

so, i am hoping that the phone is as it was before i installed rom manager. ps i have not trried to go to that "pre boot" screen since.

thats where im at with it. a normal, rooted optimus v.

Then you have the newer screen. You'll need to install a different recovery before you can flash a custom rom. I can't post links right now, but google for "flash image gui, " and "vm670nh.img"

You have a Hitachi screen. It is not compatible with CWMod 3.2.0.1 which is what is in ROM Manager. Go to the first link I gave you and Download the VM670NH recovery and move it onto the sd card under all the file folders(do not put it in any folder). This is called the root of the sd card. Rename it after you make sure it is not zipped (it will have .img on the end if it's not zipped).
Download a Terminal Emulator from the market.
Follow the steps for installing the recovery. Don't type in the third and fourth line of code. Make a backup of your system in the recovery. Go to "backup and restore" option. Select backup.

If you want choose to download the BACKside ROM and put it on the root of the sd card as well (zipped, should have .zip on the end)
Then download the Gapps and put them (zipped) on the root of the sd card as well.
Follow the rest of the instructions in my link.
It's really easy and Is very addictive.

My name is AndyOpie150 and I'm a ROM flashing addict.

ok so i followed the link and downloaded the file from that tutorials #2 step. i then extracted the file (unzipped) and put it in the farthest out place in my sd card (what you see when you open the sd card on the computer) it is called flash_image and the computer says it is a file (not any specific kind of file, just a file) and it is 10kb in size.

i want to make sure this is correct before going on, and you have lost me after "download a terminal emulator from the maket" anyway...

so, am i good so far and what is next.

You already have a good flash_image installed. Just download the recovery, the ROM, and the gapps, and the Terminal Emulator. Let me know when you have all that done.

i do not know if i have a flash image installed. if you are referring to the two files i mentioned eariler in my post with the link, i deleted those when i put the flash_image file that you said to, in my sd card. are those two files what you are referring to (the ones i mentioned), or is it the last file that i moved to the sd card (the one that you said to get)? also, the flash_image file seems kind of "off", can you confirm that 10kb seems like the right size for that file?

in the meantime i will be trying to find the rom itself, put it on my desktop until i know where to put it on the sd card, download a terminal emulator on my phone, and try to figure out what you are referring to when you say "download the recovery", and "and the gapps"

If you where able to flash the bad recovery you still had to have the proper flash_image to do it.
Download AndroZip from the market.

Read over my link a few more times.

Download all the items from the links that are provided.
They will either be downloaded to the Download or the Downloads folder on the sd card.
Use AndroZip to move them to the Root of the sd card. Longpress an Item, select move. hit the back button and select the move here button. You have just moved it to the root of the sd card.
To rename the recovery just long press the recovery and select "rename" then rename it recovery.img

im on a computer doing this through the usb cord to my phone btw...

anyway ill try to find whatever looks relevant to what you mean in the links you sent, and then reply with what i found, and where i put it...

you wouldnt happen to know where to find the acutal cyanogen 7 for the optimius v, would you? im having trouble finding the acutal download...

alright, i have taken the flash_image file from the first link you posted and put it in the sd card root. it replaced a smaller size file with the same name. i just put it there a few hours ago so im sure its fine that it was replaced.

i also have taken xionia_cwma_12518.6.img and put it in the root of the sd card as well. it is a .rar file. im not sure if i need to extract the file or leave it as a rar... which should it be?

those two files i got from the first (upper) of your two links.

the second link (the truth about rom manager) has too many links on it im not sure which ones to use, so im going to make sure i have all the right files from the first link... are they the right ones? What soscifically do i need from the second link?

to be clear i got the files from your two links titled "do not factory reset your rooted phone"

All the IHO ROM's are CM-7 Gingerbread ROM's.
If you want to overclock any will work just fine.
If you want total functionality+the most customizable tweaks, BACKside ROM. There is no better ROM out there for the Optimus V.
You can download everything right from the phone.
I've got to get some sleep. Look over my links a few more times.
All the instructions and links to everything you need to get a CM-7 ROM on your phone is in the first link I gave you. Just read it over a few more times.
Anything your unclear about I will try to change in that post so it's easier to understand.
read thru this thread as well so you can remember everything that you need to do.
Don't get in a hurry. If your unsure don't do it, I will be able to help after my worship of GOD tomorrow.
It's 11:13pm my time. I will be able to help after 2:30pm my time.
Good night.

hey long story short i got it and its working.

the new rom doesnt have the andriod market installed on it (idk why). how do i get it on?

hey guys i was able to fully do this and the mod is working (its awesome!). the only i was able to restore my old apps from titanium backup and they work fine. i think that your not supposed to install system apps so i only instaled the system apps that i KNOW wont mess the new rom up... maybe you can clarify if this is correct (that i shouldnt just hit restore all system apps in titanium backup)?

i was kind of able to use wha you guys said here and what was in the links to piece together what needed to be done... not all the info on this thread was correct and not all the info in the links was corrrect, but between the two all the puzzle pieces were there.

thanks for all your help with this!

i cant be specific, since i already forgot exactly where each error was, but i think one of the links you gave me had some false information (or at least didnt appy to me...) it had somethigng about me needing to install something called gapps (google apps) for this to work. when i followed the link to find gapps, it said on the page that had gapps to download that i didnt need the gapps after all, since i had a froyo ysytem instead of gingerbread...

it was some subtle errors, and im sure you dont need to worry about it...

if you really want to fix it, your a lot more knowledgable them i am with rooting android phones, just follow the links you gave me and play like your trying to do the same thing i did any ill bet you will see them.

oh btw, i think i already know the answer to this BUT, now that i have root autority, and have a custom rom and the ability to overclock, can i download the flash player thing that ususally isnt allowed on this phone, due to the optimus v not being able to "handle it"? it would be cool to be able to play flash games on the browser...
