No matter what I try I can't seem to get lockscreen notifications to turn the screen on so that I can see them. I hear the notification sound but unless I manually turn the screen on nothing happens.

I've checked and rechecked all the settings both within apps and in phone settings but still no joy.

Is this something that just isn't possible? Or should I be seeing the screen light up when notifications come in?

    Thanks!!

No I do not. But even when I had it on it didn't make a difference.
I thought that it works the same as on iOS but maybe not.

i dont use ios so i dont know what you experience on that platform.

on the note 8 i use, i have AOD active.

for example, when i get an outlook notification, (and I have sounds enabled and do not disturb is not active) i hear and see the icon.

i can tap on that outlook icon on AOD and it will open up the lock screen so i can use my irises to unlock the phone.

then i got direct to the outlook app and directly to the email. same goes for text, whatsapp, etc..

Turning the screen on for notifications in Android is a per app basis. Some apps have control over this. Like Textra, you can go into settings and set if you want to have the screen turn on or not. But usually Android doesn't turn the screen on on a systemwide basis. The app is allowed to dictate this.

To override, you'd need an app like Lightflow which intercepts the notification to enable its own effects. Lightflow will allow you to not only change the LED color that flashes per app, it will also allow you to make the screen light up on a per app basis even if the app has no control over that in its own settings.

Okay I think I understand now. On iOS it’s a system wide setting. If you have lock screen notifications turned on then all notifications will light up the screen. You can however choose the turn it off for specific apps. As I understand it now on Android the app itself has to support this.

Thank you because it’s been driving me crazy trying to get it to "work". I’ll check the app you mentioned. That may solve my issue completely.

Make sure you click in the middle of the setting line subject to access more options...

Meaning Settins, > Lock screen and Security > Notifications....Do not just toggle this setting ON on this screen.... please touch on Notificatons title to access sub menu... where you have now more options..... ON , Hide Cotent..., Icons Only and All Apps and the list of apps...

Now make sure there you have Hide Conntent to OFF. and Notification ICon Only OFF......

Let me know if you find the way to make Notification stay longer on the lock screen then the 1 minute default I"m experiencing

Thanks for this reply. I was hunting for a text app that would turn on my screen when I received a text so I had time to read it comfortably and even reply without having to unlock my phone. Unfortunately, with the onscreen display active, my Note 8 wouldn't do it with Google Message or Samsung Message. Then I found Textra after some searching and it works. I didn't know about Lightflow though, so I will check that out to see if it can allow Google Message or Samsung Message to have the function too.

Really? I didn't see an option for it to wake the phone and allow replies without unlocking the phone.

EDIT: Looks like Textra does this without issue, so I'm sticking with it. Verizon Message+ only shows a very brief preview (even with the pop-up box option selected) while in AOD mode, and will not show the reply popup unless I touch my home button so the AOD goes away (unless I use it with Light Flow).
