how to update from 1.5 to 1.6

I have a t moblie g1, won it in a contest, very old but i like it
however, there is no way i can get like any apps because it says my phone isnt regreisted as an andriod, so i looked it up and found out i need to update to 1.6. is there anyway that if i update to 1.6, i still wont be able to get some apps? whats the highest update for my phone? and how do i update it? please help
