I just got a samsung fascinate! got a few questions.

So i just bought a fascinate, used and have a few questions of it. I am slightly new to the Android scene, been lately in the iphone scene but am starting to like android better. Here are my questions.

I want to unlock my phone because currently it is locked to telus. How may i go on doing that, i am currently on 2.1

If i were to be on a custom firmware, how would i know as i am not the first owner?

is there a way to update to the newer 2.2 and if i do will i lose the unlock(if i unlock it) and have to re unlock it like the iphone

how can i root my phone or know if it is rooted already?

Your phone is likely not rooted unless you have an app called Superuser. If I were you I would go through Kies and update right to 2.2, then do the unlock. Once you are on 2.2, make sure Kies isn't running and download and install SuperOneClick to root your phone. Follow that up with going to the market place and download Galaxy S unlocker and going through the 3 steps.
