1. Nand backup
2. reboot to bootloader
3. enter fastboot mode ( with usb connected to PC )
4. fastboot erase system -w
5. fastboot flash radio radio.img
6. fastboot reboot-bootloader
7. confirm new radio
8. reboot to recovery
9. nand restore

Thanks for the clarifications. I'm sure many others will benefit from the optimal radio upgrade steps.

For those who not familiar with fastboot, (me), here is a couple tidbits. If you have ADB then you have FASTBOOT as both come on the Android SDK and both are located in the same tools folder of the sdk.

here is copy/paste about fastboot from thread 619153.

Fastboot is protocol used to update the flash filesystem in Android devices from a host over USB. It allows flashing of unsigned partition images.

Notable fastboot commands:

fastboot erase XXX - Will erase the partition XXX (such as userdata, cache) - mainly used for resetting phone and clearing userdata / factory settings.

fastboot flash XXX YYY - This will flash XXX partition with YYY image. e.g: fastboot flash system system_update.img will flash/update your system partition with an image called system_update

fastboot reboot - this will reboot your phone normally

fastboot devices - If you don't know anything, this is the ONE thing you have to know. Gives you a list of devices connected to the computer. This is also a good way to make sure that your phone is actually connected to the computer.

fastboot oem unlock - this will unlock your bootloader - NOTE THIS WILL VOID YOUR NEXUS ONE WARRANTY

im not sure what "fastboot" is but you can simply flash the radio the same you do with any rom or .zip file from recovery. Also to add, a nandroid is always a good thing, BUT your radio is not saved in the nandroid file.

I have been on the new radio for about 3 days now and since the update, ive been constantly on 4 bars, even indoors. The better your signal is, the less time your phone spends looking for a signal. Since the new radio, Ive consistantly done 16 hour days of batter life, and thats with email coming all day, regular texting and phone calls, browser use, and the LP+ facebook widget updating hourly. Havnt noticed much change in call reception, but it was good before the new radio, so no complaints there
