Root Linux on optimus v?

Second question first, no. You need a dual boot capable boot loader, which I doubt is available for a phone.
First question, I know there is a build of Ubuntu ment for 'droids, but I don't understand the point. Android is already based on Linux, all that's missing is KDE or Gnome.

it can be done:
[DEV][Proof-of-Concept] Boot from SD on Optimus V - xda-developers
but there isn't an app or recovery out that supports it on our device.
so, it's an involved process, and you have to have a class 6 or higher sd card for it to be effective.

possibly the nand partitions could be modded to support it without sd card, but that'd be even more involved and I don't remember reading about anyone getting the partitions resized successfully on the optimus s or v.

if I had the time I'd finish a multiboot recovery, but it'd have to be worth my while, since my normal waking time is mostly spent tending to my kids.

It's not only possible, it's actually kinda cool. ;)

If it wouldn't take three days to compile, I would even try building Android on an Android device. ;)

Fair enough, I still think Lilo, Grub, and such. I've got a solid Unix background, but I'm still figuring out just what our phone are capable of. I was jazzed when I made mine run Quake 3, then crestfallen when I found I couldn't play without a physical keyboard! So it goes, that's why I actually POST here instead of just lurk. I'm learning from you guys!

Hell yeah! Like forcing Slackware to play nice on a Dell laptop in the mid nineties. Worth the effort just for the satisfaction of seeing it run.

You do know how to over clock and super charge the phone to make it have no problem right. You keep seeming to think the phone is not capable of what it is.

I actually have mine clocked at 748/480 using the smartASS governor. I can't speculate how yours behaves, but mine tends to choke a little when running any VoIP apps. GrooveIP works about the best, but Yahoo messenger (for example) is almost useless running voice. Another example is FlexT9, it is ridiculous how much lag it has.
I love my phone, but not all processors are created equal. Mine is slightly less equal than yours. :)

I can't seem to get mine stable up past 800. I must admit, I haven't played with the supercharger script. I've heard mixed things about it.

FlexT9 works great for me, though the keyboard takes about a half second longer to appear than the stock keyboard. GrooveIP I've always had issues with. Running 480/748.

Funny, I have the reverse results at the same settings. I keep using FlexT9 in spite of having to wait for it to catch up with me just because I really like how it predicts my next word. If it weren't for that, I'd probably still be on the stock keyboard.

Have you tried the latest Beta of Swype? It has good prediction I use touch pal myself

Well, I'm running it now. Definitely faster than FlexT9, and it looks nice. I'll give it a few days, and see where it goes.
