Help Mesmerize wont go on silent

I've had my Mesmerize for 5 days now, and my daughter has had hers for about 2 weeks.
My husband went and bought one as well, and while we were at the US Cellular store they said that all of our phones needed to be updated. So, they did that, and now our phones won't go to silent. We used to be able to by using the volume button on the left side of the phone. But now, vibrate is the lowest sound setting it will allow the phone to go on.
Anyone have any suggestions on how we can get it to be on silent?

Hold your power button, as if you were going to turn your phone off. You should get a screen with 3 options: Silent mode; Airplane mode; Power off. Tap Silent mode, which will turn the sound off and put the phone in vibrate mode. It will stay that way until you do the reverse. Hope this helps.

That is the same as toggling "silent" from the status bar, which is what they are saying they don't want.

OP: You can go to the main settings menu (from home screen, menu button-->settings) and go into the sound settings to control the different volume levels. There are volume levels for ringtone, media, notifications, and system.

You can create a home screen shortcut to that menu if you use it a lot. There are also several apps in the market that will give you home screen widgets to help control it.

Another good way to manage them is to use a profile manager. Profile managers allow you to set the phone up to have certain settings at certain times. (example, "silent" except for phone calls from 11 PM-6 AM)
