Help Missing phone contacts

[Android Question]

Since a recent update on my Nexus 5 phone most of my phone contacts have disappeared and when I add them back and turn my phone off their gone again. When I sync to Google I only get mail contacts with no phone number and nothing shows up on sim card. Where can I find my phone numbers that went missing, even those saved to home page are missing.

menu
settings
contacts
contacts to display
Is that set to show the ones you want to see? (or all perhaps)
