Newcomer to the smart phone

Hi all. I keep seeing the image to introduce myself and finally decided to post a message. I'm a late 20-something that finally purchased a smart-phone. After doing my best to use my ipod touch for mobile internet access (when I have wifi), and it is great to have the internet with me wherever I am now. Next step is some sort of custom home screen but I'm not sure if I want to root my phone.
