problem connecting to Google services

I cannot configure the Gmail app or other things that access my Google account. After I type username and password the phone says the next step may take up to 5 min, and after about 1 min it times out and says I need a network connection. I am at home on WiFi. The email (not gmail) app works with my account.

The main thing I am trying to do right now is get my Google contacts onto the Evo.

My wife is having the same issue.
She had to do a factory reset to get it to work.
so far so good.......
