When starting to enter a URL into the browser I keep getting sites popping up which I've never been to. Is there some way to stop this, or to clear the list?

Eg enter 'a' and I get
    amazon.com
    ask.com
    apple.com
    adobe.com
about.com etc. Sometimes foreign language sites show up, in non-western characters.

The phone is new. I've tried clearing the history and the search history, disabling search suggestions, even setting airplane mode in case the phone was fetching this live.

Still happens after a factory reset, with no SIM, SD, or WiFi - they're definitely tucked away in the ROM somewhere.
