screen freezes then app not responding

I have a samsung galaxy centura and all of a sudden the screen will freeze then several min later a box will pop up on the screen saying _______ (app) not responding, do you want to close? Choices are usually, Wait-Report-OK. It will do this for most of the apps on my phone, sometimes rendering it useless for 20 min. Any ideas?

Phones with small amounts of RAM can't run apps designed to run on phones with large amounts of RAM - but it still could be defective phone. It depends on what apps you're running at the same time and what's been done to the phone.
