Security Lock Help

I am VERY new to my HTC desire S. I created a pattern lock and have forgotten it .It asks for my gmail details and wouldn't accept that, even though I could access it correctly online. So I put in my 'backup' email details but that is not working either.Again I can access it online. Any ideas? I have checked it with email logged off online and checked caps lock. My screen has the following on : Too many pattern attemps! Sign in with Google account ( when I do this) it changes to Invalid username or password.
Can anyone help me? PLEASE X

What google account did you set the phone up with? You need that. And I can't remember if you need to put @gmail.com or you have to remove that.
