    My normal setup:
    * 4 home screens full of app shortcuts
    * No widgets
    * No syncing except for gmail
    * Bluetooth, GPS and Wi-Fi turned off
    * I'll chew broken glass before I use a task killer, so don't go there

I've tried almost all of the ROMs listed here. Don't get me wrong, these ROMs are awesome and I'd like to use them, but the stock ROM runs circles around them as far as battery life. I can get 18 to 26 hours from a single charge on the stock Evo 4G ROM but I don't think there is a custom ROM/custom kernel combo that can touch that.

It's a shame too because it sucks having to charge my phone more than once a day. Well, back to stock I go.

It's weird, phone manufacturers make ROMs that are great on the battery but the features suck. Third-party ROM devs make ROMs that are full of great features but the battery life sucks. These two entities need to put their heads together and gives us better ROMs.

Curse you, HTC, you've spoiled me!

from all the tweaking that i have done since launch day i can firmly say that having WiFi and GPS on does NOT affect the life of my battery

with just toggling MOBILE on and off i can get all day without any issues with 12 widgets on my screens... i actually forced myself to not use network on a single charge and lasted 2 days...

so i agree with you, something needs to be done, but 3G is the killer here. a ROM that is efficient on data sent and received will be best.

Hmm, I've never done that.. I'll have to look into keeping a mobile toggle widget on my main screen. Thank you :)

Screen profile, where do I find that? I'm currently on Synergy RLS1 with golden monkey kernel. Sounds like I should be able to have a "mobile off when asleep" profile or something.

Now that is one heck of a nice SetCPU guide! I'm going to have to find a way to sticky that thread.

    That'll work :)

EDIT: Ok, I set up a profile:
    Profile: Screen off
    Max: 245
    Min: 128
    Scaling: ondemand
    Priority: 50

Sounds like that should help quite a bit when the phone is asleep. Should the sacling for this profile be set to Conservative?

keep it ondemand. and your prority should be set at 100. but it does not matter too much though. as you should not have many profiles anyways.

Yeah, I can see having too many profiles being a burden. I have set this one to 100. Thanks again :)

    UPDATE:
Well, I've been using this SetCPU profile for over an hour now and my battery life has definitely improved already.

    I have a related question:
This is my first time using Setcpu (or flashing a kernel), and I tried the same thing -- set up a "screen off profile" at 128 min, 245 max -- but I don't have the option for "ondemand" under scaling (just interactive, conservative, userspace, powersave, performance, or smartass). Also, it won't let me adjust the priority. What am i missing?

    I'm on MIUI 1.8.5 w/ Tiamant 3.3.7. TIA.

the main place that you want ot set the governor is on the main page. and the default governor is ondemand. in your profiles that you set you can also set the governor there as well.

Sounds like SetCPU takes the scaling choices from what the kernel offers, and he may be running a custom kernel.. I don't have an option for smartass governor with the golden monkey kernel.

Hmm, I don't have the "ondemand" option on the main page either... would that be because of the way the Tiamat Kernel is set up, or an issue with Setcpu?

And if that's just the way the kernel works, what should I set the screen-off profile to? Right now I have the main at "smartass" and the screen-off profile at "powersave" -- would that work?

    what rom are you on?

cm7 has its own scaling cpu abilities built in.

smartass is the one you want anyways. and you do not need a screen off profile with smartass as that is one of its functions.

Thanks for the advice, I'll ditch the profile.

And ROM, I'm trying out MIUI 1.8.5 with Tiamat v3.3.7 this week. Didn't expect to enjoy it so much. :)

miui is not for me, but glad it is working out for you. you do not necessarily need to ditch the profile. you could still underclock the screen off profile you like. the profile of 128/245 should be fine. i was just pointing out that smartass does have screen off built in.

Ah ok, thanks, I'll give that a shot. Kernals and Setcpu are all very new to me right now.

And I understand about MIUI - seems some love it, some hate it. For me once I got rid of the iOS-like icons and threw everything in folders, I really started enjoying all the settings they've included. Also since I don't get 4G here that doesn't play into the choice.

Hard to believe, but I can't get the battery on any AOSP ROM last to as long as the stock ROM and I've tried every AOSP ROM listed here. I can get just over 20 hours out of a single charge on the stock ROM, but I can't get more than 6 or 8 hours out of any AOSP ROM on my Evo 4G no matter what I do. Is anyone else getting more than 10 hours on a single charge with the Evo 4G AOSP ROMs?

The only thing I'm doing differently between stock and custom ROMs is I have SetCPU setup with a 128/245 screen off profile.. and battery life is worse without that profile.

Manufacturers may be guilty of bloating their ROMs, but you obviously can't beat their battery life.

I found a ROM that's way better than stock. There was a time when I would have agreed with you and then I found that the CyanogenMod-7.1.0-RC1-Supersonic ROM was the best for battery life. I have tried just about every kind of ROM out there but found this one to be the best for battery life. I use my phone quite a bit for work. Lots of calls, bluetooth and gps has to be on and I do a lot of facebook and internet surfing for info and entertainment. You could say I am a bit on the heavy usage side and when I get home, I still have half the battery life. If I forget to charge my phone, I don't worry so much. The kernel that comes with the ROM seems to be just fine. If you want battery life, go there.
