So I recently discovered that t-mobile has 5 GB data cap and after surpassing that point forward your internet speed is throttled for the remainder of the billing cycle. I first discovered this while out of town for Christmas and yeah I didn't have normal internet so I used much more data on my phone so I can see why this would have happened.

This morning a got another one of those "your data will be slowed" messages but this time it has only been 7 days into my billing cycle. This time I have not used anywhere near that much data so it leads me to believe there is a data hog app on my phone. But I cannot seem to find what it is. I called T-Mobile up and they cannot help me whatsoever which I guess I understand but this is starting to get very frustrating. I have thought of doing a master reset on my phone but then that would seem to me to just delay the problem of me installing that same application again and the same data hog problem happening.

Anybody have any tips or tricks on how to track down a data hog app?

You might try an app that can keep track of how much data a given app uses. Here is one I've used before:

Download Network TrafficStats Lite for your Android phone on AppBrain

Thanks! This is the kind of thing I was looking for. I installed the app and will monitor the results. Once I find the offending app I will make sure to post it so others do not have to go through this same ordeal :)

I saw another thread where someone was using one of those apps and it had to be faulty, because the app said the data hog was the photo gallery.

I would check the refresh settings for any news, weather, or social networking apps.

I have several thousand pictures on picasa that sync with my gallery and I upload all the pictures I take, but I have never had a problem with my gallery using much data.

I have gone over my limit once, but that is because I was staying with a friend without internet for a month so I was tethering almost constantly.

That's why I think the data monitoring app that person used is faulty.
