The Great American Eclipse

Eclipse glasses are everywhere now. I walked into Walmart and the first display is Eclipse glasses. I walk into the hardware store and there are Eclipse glasses
They are an absolute necessity so I'm glad they are readily available. Amazon was the prime source of glasses back in 2017. I've not seen them for sale here in central Kansas but I haven't really looked. In the scheme of things, my home digs is not very close to the eclipse path of totality.

The cloud cover predictions aren't improving along the eclipse route. There is nothing to be done but to hope for better sky. The eclipse is just a week and a day away! I talked to a friend yesterday that I shared the 2017 eclipse with. Though a bit late in the planning, he is headed for the Little Rock area for the eclipse. His lives in the very SE part of Kansas so he's hoping to just make a day trip out of the 8th. I wish him luck in trying to travel the day of. I'm sure it will be doable but it won't be fun.

The weather forecast for the 8th for my viewing area is not good. Cloud cover is predicted with scattered showers. Thunderstorms over night are likely. Naturally I was hoping for better sky but I'm not a bit surprised. It is spring and with spring the weather is always a big question mark. I hope your viewing area has a more favorable forecast.

Nope... looks like our spot will be partly to mostly cloudy, which means we're not spending the time or money to take that chance. If I want to gamble, I'll go to the casino. I'm watching Monday's forecast until tomorrow morning... if it doesn't clear up, I'll cancel our reservations and plan a romantic getaway with the Darling Bride. Besides, she just surprised me with a 5-day fly fishing outing somewhere in November... so we'll end up spending the money now, or spend it then.

I had to pay for my spot in advance. It will be fun with the family and we are taking the bikes and plan to do some trail riding. Our spot is on 7 acres with lots of things to do. It would be a lot more fun if we had clear sky but the adventure and quality time with the family will be quality.

In 2017 we drove from the Southern part of the Kansas to the Nebraska under a full cloud cover. We took up our spot and our friends arrive and we started partying. Just prior to totality the sky cleared. It was clear for the less than ten minutes and then was completely socked in again. It happened once... it could happen again.

I made the call this morning. Still 50-60% cloud cover, with increasing clouds as the day progresses. That's more than the risk I'd take on that kind of trip. Fortunately Navy Lodge allows cancelations up until check-in time, so we'll take the money saved and put it toward one of her fly fishing outings.

I'm heading for Oklahoma in the morning. The forecast is not good. We will have fun anyway. The place I've rented is a sweet place with seven acres of woods and lots of things to do. Cornhole, horseshoes, frisbee golf, fire pit, hot tub, etc... It's in the hills so it will make for some fun bike riding.
It's near the lake so there is the marina and all of the tourist eateries and bar and grills about. It's a hoping spot without being in totality. I hope we see the eclipse. I'm not counting on it.

My parents were born and raised in Oklahoma. However they came from the extreme NW part of the state in the pan handle. I'm visiting the extreme SE corner of the state. I've never seen that part of the state and I understand it is attractive. If not for the path of the eclipse, it would have never crossed my mind to travel to Broken Bow. I tried for a week to book a place in Texas then slowly worked my way NE along the path before finding and interesting area with a vacancy.

There is something super majestic about the total eclipse. The moment of totality is very moving. This was my second time for the experience and I still haven't found words that convey the feeling.
My daughter was proposed marriage during the totality. I'm getting a son in law!
