This isn't scientific. There is no purpose to the poll other than to entertain the curiosity some people have. Lumping all the Whites, and Black into one group would also defeat the purpose of the poll. Culturally, I think the worst is "Asians" as that encompasses areas from Japan to India which are completely different culturally.

The portion of my post you quoted stated that this question about race would be separate from the question asking which "cultural one" you associate yourself with. If you would like I will start a "Hispanic Ethnicity" poll (and give another reason for people that hate these polls yet click on them anyway to comment how much they hate them.) There was no scientific study behind the poll. Honestly I could careless who has a Droid, as long as they're not using an iPhone. People do take interest in this though. If I was allowed 20 options instead of 10 I could have un-lumped the Hispanics. I think this way is kinda ridiculous to be honest, but many people got very upset and the original poll. Which I also think is ridiculous, which is why I added that "overly sensitive" jab.

If you consider yourself Hispanic then you would check the box next to Hispanic. If you do not, then you would check the box next to Non-Hispanic White. If you are half black and half white then you could either select "Two or More Races" or check both "Non-Hispanic Black" and "Non-Hispanic White" or you could even check Hispanic if you believe that is the best suit for you.

It most likely stemmed from the option not being in there, and some people getting offended by it. So the government chose to do it that way the next time so as to not offend them again and in doing so offending some other people by putting "Non-Hispanic" in front of everything else. Which leads to aileendq's about the Census in generally. I really don't see why this is even needed in the Census, but our government is so concerned about links between race and wealth. I see race as an adjective. No different than describing a tomato as red, or an orange as orange. Just like the fruit, the description has no effect on how I feel about the person.

Other than the lack of personal responsibility, political correctness and race issues are the two main problems I see with the direction of the country. Look at the death of Michael Jackson. A man who was colorblind to peoples' skin, one who's whole life was dedicated to bridging the racial divide. In his legal problem days some blacks were quick throw him under the bus and in death some whites complained about news coverage of his death not mentioning these dark years of his life. Both sides have succeeded in one common goal. The man that never saw color is back to being black.

Illustrating my point that all this politically correct crap is just ...crap. I think the "n-word" was definitely bad (unless you are that race, then it's apparently okay for you to use it.), so people started using "black" but then that offended people to, so they changed to "African American" which come to find out offended people too... But it also wrongfully described the term and caused morons to do what happened to the child in your example. The same morons that suspend a kid for bringing a Lego gun to school because of the Zero Tolerance Policy.

______________________________________________

The push for political correctness has just gone to far. In trying to be 100% politically correct all we accomplish is offending someone else. Personally, I think maybe people should just stop getting offended so easily. We have turned into a country that just because someone has a difference in opinion from you, you feel personally attacked.

This poll is not here to offend people, it's not here to attack people. It's not even here to come to any sort of conclusion (other than the fact that white people always hog all the good stuff.)

And if you disagree with me, you're probably racist.
...and worst than Hitler. :p

so in the end you just wanted to vent out your political frustrations? im appalled you did not include droid 1.5 droid 1.6 and droid 2.0!

Wow, you caught me. I can't slip anything by you I guess. I apologize, I didn't include those because I don't know what they are. I've only heard of one Motorola Droid. There's the Droid Devour and Droid Eris but those wouldn't be in the Droid forums. I've heard of Android 1.5, Android 1.6, and Android 2.0 if that's what you mean. But Android OS is not a person's race and the Droid runs 2.0.1 unless they didn't upgrade or they're rooted, running something else so I don't know why I'd include 1.5 and 1.6 in the Droid forums anyway.

lol. I am with you 100% dude. I have a HUGE problem with the term "African American"... not because it is a racial issue, but because it is so insanely incorrect and misleading that it just shouldn't be used at all.

That format (ie; African American, Irish American, English American, etc) is used to describe someone who was born in another country, but has immigrated to this country later on. To call someone African American implies that they are not actually from America, but rather, they have immigrated.

If you are born in America then you are American. So what if you are black? Why do we have to label them all as immigrants just because they aren't white? Political correctness has gone so far out of whack.

Until the government changes it, I am telling everyone I am Irish American.

This is because most people assume that "African American," which is a term that denotes national origin NOT a race, automatically means Black. As someone pointed out earlier in the thread, it does not.

@DoomedRomance- not sure that "(L)umping all the Whites, and Black into one group would also defeat the purpose of the poll" as you stated. I don't think that there are more than Whites in the "White" category- unless I am missing something?

Again, all this is moot to me since race is a social term, not a biological one. And in any event, I'm pretty sure that we all KNEW that this wasn't a "scientific poll" given the venue! :)

Although I think dialogues about race are interesting and neccessary,
I won't say anything else in this thread because for me, this is a topic that has been over-talked already (in my professional life) and it's not what I come to this forum for.
