upgrading my android

If your phone is the Tecno Boom J8, that is one device I have NEVER heard of.

From what I can find out about it, it was introduced in 2016 and came with 5.1. I can't seem to find much else besides a few specs and reviews. Do you know who the manufacturer is? The update (if available) would come from either your carrier or the manufacturer of the device.

Nice phone but being built by a Chinese subsidiary it's not surprising there isn't a lot of after-market support. Techno's web site isn't very helpful (looking for stock ROMs) and doing a search for custom ROMs for a Tecno Boom J8 only turned up a lot of sketchy results.
Instead of focusing on upgrading the ROM, perhaps your efforts might be better spent on cleaning up/servicing the current Lollipop install on your phone?
-- Try booting your phone up into its Safe Mode:

When running in Safe Mode no third-party apps/services are loaded up into the background so it's just a 'clean' Android. Everything you do is a matter where any app you start up is loading up from scratch so Safe Mode is basically just a maintenance state where you're trying to determine if anything you've installed is also using up an unusual amount of system resources or causing some kind of conflict.
-- If Safe Mode doesn't reveal anything out of sorts, try wiping the system cache partition. The system cache resides in its own dedicated partition completely separate from the data partition, where all your data and things are stored so this won't affect anything of your personal stuff. To wipe the system cache you need to boot your phone into its Recovery Mode:
http://www.hardreset.info/devices/tecno/tecno-boom-j8/recovery-mode/
Note that while in Recovery Mode it's a text-only interface so you have to use the indicated buttons to navigate through the different menus. Select the 'wipe cache partition' option (this step should only take a few seconds) and then just reboot your phone. While this may not make a significant improvement it doesn't hurt to at least try, although if there were some corrupted files in the cache it might.
-- As a last resort option, you might want to do a Factory Reset. This will clear everything in that data partition so be sure you have safely backed up all your personal files, photos, browser bookmarks, etc.
