Root Various questions about rooting the OPV

Hey guys, I've had my optimus V for a while..and even though I changed the default install location to the SD card the bloatware is some how still getting to my internal storage only leaving me with 17mb of internal storage out of the 150mbs. Would rooting help this at all?

Next question, will I lose all the data on my phone? (Pictures, texts, apps, etc.) Most of my apps are already moved onto the SD..at least the more important ones, but they aren't "fully" on the SD card. Some of the data is still in internal storage.

Is it possible to install cyanogenmod onto the Optimus V? If so, how?

I'm kind of a noob at rooting, I understand the risks, this wouldn't be my first "hack" as I've hacked my wii as well, just for some reason bricking my phone doesn't sound nice :p So if anyone can give me the best way to root, that would be great. I'm assuming the chance of bricking is slim to none, but still can happen.

Thanks,
JEGuitarist

Don't worry about the title of the thread, it's just where my little tutorial took shape.

Note: The stickies are your best friend.

So if I go to root the phone (still have a fear of bricking it lol) Do I do a factory reset first? Then wipe the SD card? The SD card has apps on it. Not sure if that will effect anything. What would be the best rom to use? I read somewhere the ICS the camera button didn't work or something, and MMS had issues..

You don't wipe anything to root, just when you need to change from the stock ROM to a custom ROM.
Never use the factory reset option on the phone with a rooted stock ROM or you will have a brick. Use the option in the custom recovery only. Never wipe or format the sd card before trying to flash a ROM as this is where your nandroid back up and your ROM.zip and Gapps.zip are.

Note: After rooting, installing a custom recovery, and making a backup in the recovery it would be a good idea to get your AAA code and right it down. To backup your apps and app data use Titanium backup and AppTyrant.
AppTyrant to backup all your .apk's (apps before there actually installed) and Titanium just to backup those apps that you want to save the data (Titanium has a habit of hanging on the install of some apps which is why it's better to use AppTyrant to backup all your .apk's)

The easiest way to root and install a custom recovery (one that is very good for install Gingerbread, ICS, and Jelly Bean) is found here: http://androidforums.com/optimus-v-all-things-root/531810-rooting.html
If you have a problem with a download site just try another.

Okay according to that thread, I can use Gingerbreak to root the phone. Will this install a gingerbread rom? (since it obviously sounds like gingerbread haha) Or will it just root it and still use the stock rom? Okay, I "jumped off the cliff" and successfully rooted my phone. Still running the stock rom but I have done it! Now before I mess it up, how do I install a custom recovery?

Everything you need is in the stickies ^ , with the exception of some newer ROMs.

Alrighty :) I'm starting to understand now. Thanks for your help thus far :D
My main concern about flashing a rom is that I want one that doesn't mess up MMS (I send and receive pics a lot..) As far as I can tell I do not believe this rom has that bug (It appears most if not all bugs have been fixed) Is there a more updated cm rom without bugs? (Also being such a big noob is there a way I could change the green notify bar?)

Any Gingerbread ROM from the Github ( a link is in the All Things Root Guide sticky under ROM's).
Note: The best build version of the BACKside ROM is the 01312012. The download link can be found by going to the BACKside thread and looking at JerryScripts posts from that day ( I can't remember which page it is on ).

Thanks so much for your help Andy! I flashed in CM7.2.0 RC1-VM670 BobZhome and I'm loving it!
