So the second I dropped my eris and the screened cracked (touch screen still works) I searched this forum for a solution since I have no insurance. I kept reading in threads that if you simply take your phone into Verizon, they will replace your phone for $50 even if you have no insurance.

Well to make a short story shorter, went to Verizon and they said they stopped doing that about a month ago. LAAAAAAAAAAAAAME!

Looks like I can buy a new/used one on eBay for about $250. Anyone have any better/cheaper solutions????

No offer for a refurb one. I didn't even know they did that. Can I just take my cracked phone back in and be like "Hey, can I trade this broken eris for a refurb one for $169?"???

From the variety of stories on this forum, I don't feel like there are any specific company policies from store to store.

Well thanks for the heads up thenestor. I think the one thing I have learned over the years being a Verizon customer is that every store seems to have their own rules.

Why am I still paying for phone insurance then? If they wont replace it then there really isn't a point to getting it insured...
You gotta re-read the post man. He doesn't have insurance.

Getting back to the point, I have heard of people buying replacement screens online. I'm not sure where, but I would try ebay first.

Called support today about some problems I've been having and they are sending me a new Eris free of charge. It'll be here Wednesday. Might try that route.

Certified Pre-Owned Devices

You can find the models and info about the certified pre-owned phones here. The Eris is $169.99 and does not extend your contract. You are allowed to purchase 1 CPO phone a year. I just got mine like this not too long ago and it works great. Comes with a 1 year warranty as well.

Don't know if this is possible where you live, but when I dropped my ATT Tilt, I was able to get it repaired locally around $90 - 100. The ATT people recomended this place. I imagine that a lot of places have a shop that does this sort of thing. You might ask your Verizon store if they know of a local repair facility. If they don't know, Google it. If you still don't have one, you might call these guys and see if they accept shipments:

Cellular Renewal‎
4336 Kenilwood Drive
Nashville, TN 37204-4401(615) 485-2494‎

I'm not saying that replacing the screen for an Eris will cost the same as my Tilt, but it's work checking into.

Sales tax here is pretty high (9.25%) so it might be cheaper if you can find a place in a location that doesn't have as high of a sales tax. But I don't think I paid more than $100 even with tax. You'll have to add shipping costs and not having a phone for a week, but if you don't have a local alternative, it might be your best alternative.

They were very good and had my phone back to me the next day. It's a small one or two man operation, and the guy who did my work was good.

Hopefully you can find someone locally though.

If it goes back with physical damage they "might" (more likely will) charge him full price for the phone.

Nashville FTW

you are not getting an eris from verizon unless you pay full retail if you don't have insurance ... the easiest thing to do would probably be to get one off ebay or craigslist. i dont even think the htc warranty covers accidental damage. ...

i suggest that when/if you get a new eris to get insurance ...

it costs like 6 dollars a month ..
sooo worth it even if you have never had to replace a phone before because accidents happen ... thats why they call it an accident ;) :)

You can buy a new screen then put it on yourself, not sure how hard it is though. New screens go for like $50
