[Verizon] Just root on stock ROM?

I'm looking to get my gfs VZW GNex rooted on 4.1.1, and am feeling like quite the noob in the process. I've rooted several devices already, but this one doesn't seem so straight forward... I'm sure I'm missing something...

I've got the GNex Toolkit form xda...

Do I need to unlock the bootloader before being able to root?

I'm not even finding a "root the Verizon gnex for dummies" type tutorial :-(
