I would return to pure stock (maybe through kies), install g60madmans CWM recovery and then follow punkmaxx steps to update. Hopefully you have your apps and data backed up with titanium or something similar.

I think the differences may be the recoveries we are using and maybe some having superuser and others having supersu I'm not sure. I am stock rooted odexed with supersu and g60s CWM and the update went flawless and it also updated the baseband. After updating and booting up the first time, the system prompted me to reboot to "finalize the update" and that's when I noticed the baseband had also updated to MG2.

Yes, the update was flawless but the only problem is root access. Even root checker says I don't have root

Good news, root is restored by installing Root from Recovery from CWM! On the new update with root access again. Basically, just do the "root + custom recovery" tutorial thing, but start at the point where you boot into recovery near the end.

23. Go To Recovery Mode
24. Let Go As Soon As Your Device Lights Up
25. Use The Volume Up And Down Buttons To Navigate And The Power Button To Choose
26. Navigate To 'Install From SD Card' And Select It
27. Navigate To 'Choose Zip From Internal SD Card'
28. Navigate To The Root From Recovery Zip And Select It
29. Select 'Yes', Then Select 'Go Back' Once The Installation Is Finished
30. Then Finally Select 'Reboot System Now'

Trying that now!

g60's cwm fails sig verification.

OOH SNAP: i have baseband back but no lte. Network now says 'samsung' instead of 'virgin mobile'
ALSO if i remember correctly i couldn't use g60's cwm because of the 'new' device 'can't mount sdcard blah blah blah' error!!!

EDIT2: i should have mentioned... after kies restore and reboot, wifi connected and update downloads started INCLUDING this mg2 update, system rebooted into stock recovery and the mg2 update failed signature verification. That mg2 update is still there in /cache 'i can see it when booting into recovery' but it won't apply!

Should the recovery android avatar have a red triangle in it with an exclamation mark? I have a feeling i am hosed!!!

Exactly, that does sound like stock recovery. Were you able to return to complete stock firmware through Kies and then install CWM?

(Also, it should be side-noted here that if you are using CWM as I did to update, that particular recovery does not recognize the 64GB sd cards in exFat format. If you have a 64GB sd card in exFat format you will need to place the update zips on your internal sd card. I do have a 64GB sd card but I formatted it to FAT32 with my computer to increase its compatibility for situations such as this.)

So wait are we going to lose our apps and data if we do this? Also I don't have CWM I have TWRP with SuperSu so what will happen with those? I'm confused.

Yes that was stock recovery. I was checking to see if the update would succeed with stock recovery. It failed with sig verification. I just don't remember stock recovery having that red triangle, that is why i asked. I installed the kies firmware update md7, g60's cwm zip fails sig verification. I think my whole issue is that i had to use the sprint cwm because of the 'new' device issue not seeing /sdcard with g60's cwm. Well this is not turning out to good. I may have to use your stock signed zip that i modified with the flash counter reset feature and try and warranty this bugger.

For those not families with the 'new' device issue, read here...

Ok so i installed TheBritton's signed stock zip that i modifed with flash counter reset. Counter reset works, yip yip yippy!!! Back to stock rom with 'No' for flash count and after going through device setup, again i get the 'Install Update' popup and again i try. This time i have the 6.0.28 cwm that works on the 'new' devices but the update failed with...
assert failed apply_patch_check blah blah blah
update_sph-l710_md7_to_mg2.zip
(status 7)
installation aborted

I just woke up from a rare nap my son let me take so I may not have read this right but are you not able to just flash the 2 stock files in the"Sprint" cwm?

I'm unable to flash the two zip files OR complete the OTA update. Both fail. After the first fail, i lost baseband, now i have baseband, 3g and wifi work but no lte. I've now reset to 'No' flash count and trying to figure out my next step.

Man, Jupiter this is one of those times when a TAR would save you big time. I'm still puzzled as to what happened. I'm assuming you didn't try to accept the OTA with CWM.

Can you restore a nandroid and then flash the stock modem with Odin? Sounds like you're modem is corrupted.

I didn't lose any apps, data, or settings with the update. Painless and easy for me although a small few have experienced issues with the update and I'm not sure why so be sure to back up your stuff before you update just in case. I completed the process within five minutes without a hitch.

I tried accepting the OTA with stock recovery and cwm both failed. Am sure the first failure AFTER it had started is the cause. I tried going stock and restoring one of my nandroids and flashing the stock modem, that is what gave me the baseband back and 3g. But still no lte. Thanks for trying to think of something!

P.S. the OTA install pop up comes up every time after i flash either a nandroid or stock rom now.

Just wanted to note that i am sure my issue is not related to this procedure OR the zip files but rather to my device. I would speculate that unless you have one of the newest SPH-L710 i wouldn't worry about this update harming you. Mine is dated from April.
