How do i setup a notification "alert", so maybe the blinking light would show if i have a voicemail?

If i miss the initial call, and don't here the initial sound notification, i cannot depend on unlocking the phone and checking the little voicemail icon...

You can try noled app. It can be used to display on screen if you have a text emails missed calls and voicemails and also tell you the number for each. I used this on my captivate and it worked great since it didn't have a notification led. I also put it on my inspire without thinking cause I was so used to having it.

Not an answer to your specific question...I recommend a visual voicemail app like Phone Fusion, Youmail, or Google Voice. They store the voicemails locally and you can forward them in emails, etc. They also have notification features. IMHO, Phone Fusion is the best of the bunch. All are free.
