Want to keep unlimited data when you upgrade to 4g, better hurry...

I could be wrong, but I think people are suggesting that if you sign your contract now, you'll get to keep the pricing plan for the length of the contract-- not so much that you'll get to pay your low, low prices forever, but once you sign a contract for $30 unlimited, they can't charge you more until your contract expires.

Like many others I never bothered to read the contract, but I'm willing to bet that somewhere in there it says pricing subject to change or something to that effect.

Well, I thought of that, but I specifically asked the retention specialist if that would be the case and she said it wouldn't. So, I'm going to hold them to her word. If they mess with it, there are other carriers.

If they try to back away from it, you can always go into "Yoda mode"

"Your word you gave. Fulfill it you must. If not, walk the path to Sprint store I will, Hmmm?"

The reason you have to sign up now is because you get locked in to that contract. If they change a contract (prices/tiers/whatever) so that it's worse for you it's called a "Material Adverse Change" and you can quit your contract with no fees.

Don't take my word for it...search for it and you'll see that it's how many folks escape their contracts when things get ugly.

But isn't your contract up every 2 years anyway and you have to renew it?

So at most your grandfather'd plan would last at most 2 years
Not really. You can stay on the same "plan", just give a new 1 or 2year commitment.

It's when you change plans, do the grandfather clause go out the window.

For example, you can stay on the same plan for as long as it is supported (say Family plan 700min for 69.99), but watch out when they offer to give you twice the minutes for maybe less money, because that's a plan change, and the new terms go into effect with that.

Thank freakin' God the industry is slowly moving towards sustainable data plans.

I'd be happier if they'd just put the kibosh on grandfathering in the unlimited plans. Nobody should have unlimited data, because nobody actually does have unlimited data.

Christ on a cracker. Lots of people bitched that they cracked down on tethering, but in the same breath nobody wants tiered data plans. If you get the latter, it reduces pressure on the former.

People are just upset because they think VZW taking something away. In reality, MOST people will likely have lower bills in a tiered data plan, but they don't realize this. They are paying more to have what they think is an unlimited plan, but are paying for much more data then they realy use. With the tiered plan, they will only pay for the data they use = lower bill.

EDIT: With this said, I do like the feeling that I have "unlimited" data, knowing that my bill will be the same amount each month. I don't use lots, so I would probably have a lower bill with tiered, but I can understand and appreciate the "comfort zone" feeling of the current plan.

I dunno, I like the options, but if we were to have more of a tiered SMS plan I'd be screwed. I'm sure there's tons of people that rarely use their data, but overall I find it hard to believe verizon's going to implement changes that are going to cost me LESS money.

Of course, we won't know till prices come out, but I'm paying, what, $30 for unlimited data? Do you really see plans going much lower than that? At best I'm thinking $10/$20/$30 tiers. And I'm likely not going to want to be on the lowest plan, which means at BEST I'd be on a $20 limited plan, and in all likelihood i'd just be paying for the $30-medium use plan ($10/$30 seems to be a normal split)... meaning I pay the same I'm paying now but have a cap.

Verizon was offering a plan called Talk and Text plus Data starting last November and ending in the end of January as I recall. Basically they credit you $20 a month for each line you have with a data plan so it ends up being $10 per line. The plan was originally only offered to a small test group but once it got out in the net several of us that were not part of the test group got in on the deal. There is a large thread on it in the Verizon section of the forum.

I got in on the same plan but I never heard that it was "for life". It would be great if it were true but I'm not going to hold my breath.

There are also others like me. Find me a plan for 8gb/month for $30 or under. Thats what I use on average.

Have you considered that 8gb/month of data may be worth more on the free market than $30/month?
I used at least 6 gb a month and a few months I used about 16 gb on 3g without tethering, now that I'm on 4g I expect my usage to go up. At best I expect Verizon to offer 5 gb for $30 but I think it'll match or beat at&t by a gig but there's no way that I'd save money on a tiered plan.

Thanks, reading through this some of the comments about change were bothering me and I was going to bring this up. But you beat me to it.

If they change it, you have at least a month, not sure how long where you may contact them and end service with out any termination fees.

95% of AT&T's data plan users were using 2gb or less per month. When they implemented their tiered data, they saved 95% of their customers $5/month.

With data usage heading in one direction at a significant clip, i'd rather pay the five bucks and avoid overages next year when the model is even more data-heavy than this year.

And knowing at&t, I bet those overage charges are significant. They bought my landline company and have raised the monthly bills so often that I'm about to bail. And I'm a pretty loyal landline holdout. At&t sucks, and if I have to drop my landline, I won't ever do business with their lousy company again, even if they release an exclusive phone that enables you to time travel while it cooks your breakfast.

Well, okay, but that's not really the point. The point is that, while people screamed about how tiers were the company's way of gouging customers and how unnecessary they were, the reality was quite different.

Whether or not people can adequately judge how much data they're using and/or whether they go over is really another point. Of course, gouging for overages isn't okay either - I'm just pointing out that the fear of tiered prices was not warranted, except by those using excessive amounts of data already.

With limited data plans on the horizon what is the incentive for people to not install AdFree on their phones? Every byte of data coming down the pipe to you has now become precious, so why pay to be inundated with ads? Yes, yes, support the developers, blah blah. I'm all for that in paying for apps up front, but damned if I'm going to pay for ads to be showing up in an app or on the web.

Good point! Of course, AdFree requires root...
