Upgraded to rooted version of GB and having wireless tethering issues.

Wireless Tether seems to work fine but when I use the computer it is not getting online. I am able to see it and connect over the wireless manager. Once connected I get the error message that I am not connected.

In Barnacle (I just started using it today so I may be making a newbie mistake) I am getting a "DHCP: Could not bind to DHCP Port: address already in use" and then "NAT: restart:Network is down" error (I guess, it is in red font)

The log ends with "NAT: restarting now" and I can't see anything in the wireless manager.

Any help/suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

From reading other posts here, my understanding is that there is no longer a standalone app for the VZ pay tether (mynet.apk) which you could easily remove. It is believed that they integrated that function into other files/components and found a way to block the functionality of other (free) tether apps.

I don't want to sound like a butthead here but can a mod please lock this and the other thread on tether? I think most of us are pretty much done with this subject and we would like this dead horse to stay dead.

If you pay extra for it, you can tether, end of story. Not my rule, it IS becoming Verizon's though.

I doubt it is the end of story as the developers will continue to develop software that will allow us to use our phones to their full potential vs. the kneecapped sets that the providers give us.

I have seen the debates on other threads and I am always surprised by them. I know opinions are like a-holes, but I always find it surprising when people are willing to violate one thing (rooting or hacked Netflix) but draw the line at another (wireless tethering).

The original reason for this post is I was in another phone section and they were talking about having success with the wireless tethering. I was wondering if the same was true for the Droid X.

To All: Feel free to put in your $0.02 and draw this into a big debate v. answering my question like SFWB did right at the beginning. A lot of us do not dwell on the site and only come to ask a quick and simple question on the phone. If everything is working as it should we don't read all of the posts or really participate in the community. I know it is the community that makes this site strong and the more knowledge noobs get the more noobs will be able to contribute. Sorry for the diatribe.

This is exactly the type of response that gets people all worked up and wanting to chime in so I think it best if the mods lock this one up.

It seems like everyone changed their tone of voice as soon as P3Droid released his statement about tethering. Some of those that used to be helpful to those seeking information suddenly turned adamantly against it.

Back in January 2011 (JrzDroid):
if you root, you can get Wireless tether which turns your phone into a hotspot
Also, theres a way to bypass the verizon way with a paid app, but i don't recall the name
Metfanant March 29th 2011 giving advice about tethering:

1. If you want to root your phone (like jailbreaking an iPhone) then no...WiFi tether is free...a lot of phones have apps that make rooting as simple as pressing a single button and letting the app root your phone...

2. If you don't want to root, then yes, you have to pay for tethering...
I'm not trying to badmouth these members, I'm simply trying to make my point.

The funny thing is that a lot of the people who before had no problem using or giving advice about tethering are now on a personal crusade to demonize everyone who does. I'm not sure how it went from being "Ok" and a personal choice to a vile sin literally from ONE DAY TO THE NEXT.

My 2 cents...
Tethering without a plan has ALWAYS been against the TOS. Whether or not you choose to violate that TOS is up to you. IF you get busted, you will deal with the consequences.

I don't like it when I hear that people are abusing this and pulling 10+ gb each month... playing Xbox live, bittorrent, etc. That kind of abuse ruins it for everyone. Do I condemn the person who tethers 200mb a month to check their e-mail and check the weather? No. It's up to that person to decide what they want to do with their life.

if i'm a paying customer of Netflix how is it that i'm violating anything by watching it on my phone? Netflix is still getting their money.

And this is why I asked that the thread be locked. People are gonna go overboard again because of the topic. You're right about people having their own opinions and they have been spoken. But when a thread gets out of hand because of the subject it just cluters up the board with nonsense.

And for the record, allot of us enjoy reading every post. Why? Because we like to help, learn, and help some more. That's what we're hear for.

You are using their service on a device that needs to have altered software to run it. You are using their software in a manner in which it was not designed to be used. Do I agree with it? No but it is still in the gray areas of terms of service.

We could go tit-for-tat all day but it comes down to me enjoying to have the option to use my phone in the manner that it was designed to be used - open for developers to make it better. Many could argue that their plan provides them with unlimited data and what is the difference between using the phone itself to view the web or using the connection it creates. Verizon is getting their money in the form of $30+ a month and since the carrier hamstrung the device in the first place the noble developer is just right injustices in the world.

We all violate the law in one way or another, whether it is going 67 in a 65 or cooking meth. I am not here to determine what is right or wrong. I prefer to have the option to tether if I need it and would prefer to have it available to me. I do not use the feature enough to justify the additional cost through my carrier.

Blah blah blah... I'll get my way to tether and I will use it as needed and the world will keep spinning.

lets just keep the talk within a respectable tone, and this thread will be ok. no need to bring up harsh words or anything. im sure if it gets out of hand the mods will be notified and they will make the decision.

but lets just keep this on subject.

i used wireless tethering when i first rooted because there was no bad things happening, i used it for a while when i didnt have my wireless router, but once i got my router, i stopped tethering because once i was hearing about the data throttling i knew i needed to go ahead and purchase a router so that i would not be capped.

tethering is wrong, its a violation of TOS, but if you choose to violate it, then its your choice, no one elses but yours, if your hit with a big ETF fee then thats what will happen, and you cant blame anyone for it. its been preached on this forum numerous times that you shouldnt do it unless you pay for it. what each person does with their phone and contract is all on them. they make the decision, i however would personally refrain from violating my TOS.

just my opinion

....your saying netflix software wasn't designed to allow me to watch netflix?

No no no.....I meant to say HEAR. As in hearing.......a forum where you can't HEAR but read?....... haha....funny funny........lol. I just love being a goofball.......:p

Not on the android platform until recently.

Similar to your argument would be to say that android wasn't designed to allow for internet access via wireless tethering when it clearly was.

If the company wants to put restrictions on usage (Netflix or Verizon) there is a reason and a workaround would be in violation of their terms of service.

We moved this topic out of here more than a month ago. You can find that thread here. Feel free to continue the convo there. Keep it civil.

*note on rudeness and/or grammar policing: It is more than just plain old rude, it is against site rules/regs and the zero tolerance policy. Please read them. A member can be given an infraction for this.
