Would you get a Fascinate right now?

Sweet Chaos..... just had to pipe in here to say... LOVE you signature... lol... "No I will not go out with you.." ... LMAO... I can see all the guys gearing up to attempt to do just that... touche, girl!

Lol thanks =D I'm used to playing with guys on XBox Live so I'm prepared haha.

yeah, i stand by that...but i will say that if you've never had a top tier android smartphone (or a smartphone before) the fascinate *might* be just what you are looking for.

To be honest, I'm not super worried about the speed of the phone. As long as it does what I tell it to do and it doesn't freeze up on me I'm happy. It'll be my first smartphone, and I was considering phones with slower processors (LG Ally) prior to falling in love with the Fascinate. I don't know what the other phones like the Droid X, or even the Fascinate are like rooted so I'm not sure I'd be able to tell the difference lol. Maybe in the future, when I'm more comfortable with the phone, I might be willing to root, but right now I'm not considering it.

It looks like I'm going to have to wait until the end of Feb to get my phone, so I'll keep my eye out for what else is coming around then, but based on what everyone has said (despite the whole rooting thing) I think the Fascinate will be good for me.

Thanks everyone for your input. I appreciate it!! The people on this forum have proven time and time again to be awesome!

If you were asking this question a few months ago, I'm hands down tell you "Despite it's slight shortcomings, the Fascinate is a fantastic phone and probably the best phone in the Verizon line up" (3 of my friends have DInc's and they all hate them, my brother has D2 and I've found it to be entirely too heavy and bulky. I've no exp. with the Dx outside it being a little to large.)

However, even despite my love for this phone, coming this late to the game I have to say hold off. ESPECIALLY if you're not interested in rooting (which I literally just did over the weekend). If you're looking for a completely stock experience, I'd honestly wait for one of the moto's or other monster phones that are coming out in the upcoming months.

Honestly, like many others have said in these forums before: Get a phone for YOU. That YOU like. Not a phone that you HEAR others like. But that's just my $.02.

P.S. - Keep kicking ass in video games, there needs to be more girls like you in the world. (I need to have you rub off on my GF. Wait... that didn't sound right at all.)

Yeah, I'll prolly wait to buy anything until I see what's coming, but honestly, nothing I saw at CES made me go

Lol hit me up on Live. I'd love to play with her ;)

REALLY?

People... really?!?!

NO! Do NOT get the fascinate. I don't mind mine (I have to say that cause I'm stuck with it) but NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO don't get one. The lack of updates and support from Verizon/Samsung (who's pointing at who anymroe) is enough to say forget it. Not to mention the new devices coming out or even the current devices being better (in terms of support from vzw/manufacturer). I could do so much more with my phone if it were on-par with existing phones. I'm not a heavy user and you can count me in the group of people who say "why should I have to root my phone for it to work how it should out of the box?"

If you happen to fall in love with Fascinate, just get it no matter what others say. No one can choose a phone for you that you will like.
I have many friends with SF without rooting and they all seem to be happy with it. Dual core 4G phones will take a while until they are proven and common devices.

I'm like you OP, coming from a LG voyager and the fascinate being my first smartphone. i did a lot of research and found that the differences (on paper) were so subtle, I'm sure I'd be happy with any of them.

The only thing you DON'T know when buying a phone like this is how well the manufacturer is going to support it and if it will get timely updates or if you will be behind older devices in terms of software.

Get one. Try it for 30 days. If you like it, keep it, otherwise, don't!

Judging by the first page, people there seem to like it better than here lol. I don't know that site so I don't know if maybe the people here are more tech savvy and that's why you are all so much more picky about how the phone should be?

xda is (or should be) a development site...the vast majority (80-90% id guess) are root users...so you are less than likely to find many opinions that come from someone in your situation

Also, that guy meant a Telus (GSM) Fascinate, which already has had Froyo and Froyo source officially released...

ah, good catch... i never read that thread...i tend to avoid xda general discussion as their pretty awful threads

also, why they didnt make a separate forum for those guys yet at xda...........

Damn Sammy making my decision making difficult... I really love Samsung products but this whole FroYo fiasco is making me worried about getting ANY Samsung phone.

Ok, since JT let it out of the bag already, yes we DO have a Fascinate 2.2 leak. No you can't have it yet.

Sweet Chaos if you really want Froyo on your Fascinate you gotta root and you can try out an alpha version today. Judging my recent events a mostly working beta is probably just days away

It's not that I'm so worried about FroYo as much as I'm afraid of being thrown around like this again with future updates.

Another thing to consider is that new high end phones coming from Verizon this year will be 4G LTE capable mostly. It still remains to be seen how fast, reliable their 4G LTE will be and how much Verizon would charge for it though I think it will be better than Sprint WiMax. I wish that Verizon offers option of buying 3G version of Thunderbolt, Revolution, Bionic (4G antenna disabled) with cheaper 3G plan, but I doubt they will do that.
So if you don't want to take chance with early 4G phones and want to avoid extra fee, going with SF is good option I think.

Most of us phone nerds believe 2.2 will be the last version of the Android OS which ever officially comes to the SF. Never fear though as multiple 2.3 builds are already well under way. Now it is true that some dev's will start to exodus once dual core and lte phones start debuting. But by then we should a reliable and stable 2.3 experience on our phone which IMO is going to tide all but those who live on the bleeding edge for the rest of the year or certain until the second wave of lte phones.

So yes go in with eyes wide open and know and expect 2.2 is likely the end of line from Sammy [small chance on 2.3 officially but considering the wait who knows]. Trust me you wont need OTA's, too many good devs that run circles around VZW and Sammy

I think in our case dev wise we will be ok...while im obviously not quoting them....from what i've gathered birdman isn't going anywhere for a longtime and was gonna be here for the long haul....adryn i believe has no upgrades for awhile....pk has clearly shown (eris) that he will stick with a phone months after the majority of people have jumped ship....and i don't recall jt ever speaking on the subject, but with how heavily invested he's been from the beginning i don't see about to bail anytime soon

Im under the same impression but then you never know till they are out the door too. But yeah frankly once we get to a stable 2.3 thats surely going to be end of line at least officially. So unless something changes and plans gets revised I do think we wont get 2.4 or whatever else. But I cant imagine looking at my 2.3 AOSP or 2.3 CM7 this spring when those lackluster lte phones come out and being too tempted to leave. I think we'll know more about MWC next month in terms of whats in stock this summer too

yeah i think im gone in june or july whenever the "big" summer phones come out...assuming they do...but until then, nothing coming that we know of makes me think twice of pulling the trigger

Im probably a quarter behind you then. Tough for me to move to 4G without 4G service a big part of me wants to just wait till the service is here because frankly by then my dream phone might be closer to a reality. If you are anyone lives in a 4g zone then by all means I can see the temptation moving forward. Then again both at home and work I have wifi which is more or less 4G speeds or faster so Im not missing out on 4g speeds most of the time but still

Just curious. Do you guys go on 1 year contracts and pay more for phones so you can upgrade earlier or do you still go 2 years but pay retail if you want to switch in the middle? With Verizon's new policy, it's going to be tough to upgrade before 20months into the contract.

i used take 2 year contracts and upgrade at 1 year with my verizon...now that i only have one of those left ill be doing 1 years from here on out (if i stay with verizon that is)

Gotcha. I used to do the same thing and once my next upgrade comes around, i'll also be going with the 1 year contract.
