Thanks for the info. A few details on the video format you are creating would be very helpful. I tried what you posted above about 1500kpbs and keeping the file under 2GB and I get some broken pixels but not watchable video. Sound is fine. What player are you having success with on the EVO and these files? How is the mp4 muxed? streamable, ipod compatible? I do not have Tmpgnc 4.o the $100 paid version and the trial will not encode h264 using your profile.

I am much more familure with using MeGUI or handbrake for video manipulation so with some specs perhaps I can duplicate what you have done.

I really do appreciate whatever info you can provide. If I ask too many questions. perhaps you can send me a clip that works for you and I can get info from the file.

Sorry if this was mentioned before, but I'm new to Andriod as of last week - EVO.. How can I stream videos / movies on websites from Adnriod. I tired many different players last night and none worked. Says file type unsupported, although I was able to stream these same videos on Iphone.

I didn't go so far as using handbrake, but tmpgenc worked beautifully. One more thing to look out for is your framerate. Not sure what the EVO's max is, but I'm doing under 30...don't have exact number with me. There is no setting for ipod compatible formats that I'm aware of or use. I just choose mp4. I'll check to see if it's defaulting to anything. I've managed to get a video in slow motion working as well by running an avi through Windows Movie Maker first (had to get version for Vista which works on my Windows 7) and using the slow motion effect and then running it through tmpgenc. What I'll do is write down all the settings I can see it using and post them. Should be helpful.

P.S. Working in both Default vid player in Android 2.1 and Meridian..haven't tested any others but should be fine.

Well, in my journey looking for a video player that would play my xvid/divx files while I'm on a plane or waiting a database reorg to complete in a saturday to sunday night (I'm a DBA), I found out that Meridian wouldn't play those files.

But I found at the Market the "yxplayer". It play my Big Bang Theory files (.avi) with subtitles! But it is a little bit slow... It looks like it's trying so hard to play those files that it is so tired it can't play that faster. Try it and you will see.

I think that for those who want to have xvid/divx files played, this is the only option...

You know what I hate apple for?? Discontinuing that last Ipod shuffle.. It was the best thing ever made from them and I miss mine dearly. Just stopped working one day. You will not find an xvid player all that satisfactory on the EVO. H.264 video decoding is built into the hardware, divx is not so any player must decode and display in software. Re-encode your videos to h.264 and aac audio, mux them into a mp4 container with the proper specs and they will play smooth and even in high definition.

What I want to know is why is there is not a yet media player app for the android that lets sort by Genre? Every single media app for the iphone/ipod touch supports that feature, but yet android developers seem to ignore simple stuff like that. That is why people prefer that dang apple over everything else. Its not because of of superior hardware because lets face my Evo kicks an Iphone's butt. But apple (and app developers)seems to pay more attention to the user experience for their apps.
Doubletwist is a good example, the desktop portion supports genres, but does the android phone portion let you make use of this? NO! Even anybody can point me to a music/video player app for my Evo that will let me sort by genre- I would be much appreciative.

The app you are looking for is called Btunes. The UI and layout mimicks the ipod touch(good or bad depending on if you like the UI), but it supports what you are looking for. The buttons on the bottom are playlist,songs,albums,artists and genre. It cost 1.50 but it's worth it IMO because it is by far the best media player on android.

What? Meridian let's me browse by Genre. Same with the HTC Sense stock music player. Either you aren't looking hard enough or I misunderstood your question. But I never browse by genre, since its useless because I never label genre correctly. I don't know about videos, but video browsing in Android isn't intuitive at all anyway.

Stock Music player, and Meridian, both let you browse by Genre. It needs to be in the ID3 tags... maybe your files aren't properly tagged?

Zimly doesn't support sorting by Genre. Yet.

I dont understand how my samsung flip phone from 5 years ago could play xvids fine, but i've had to jump through hoops from palm os,winmo,webos and now android to do the same, i just cant for the life of me understand how a dumbphone could outperform smartphones in this instance..

There was an app for my Nokia called CorePlayer and you could play back tons of stuff with it. They are working on porting it over to Android though.

thats fine but the multiple codecs should be incorporated into android itself and usable through its native player. If your going to tout a multimedia device then it should be a multimedia device, plain and simple. I cant for the life of me understand how things like that were natively part of some dumbphones, yet smartphones have so much trouble. Its just mind bottling.

Licensing is probably the biggest issue I can imagine. Since it is a free OS, they can't include every proprietary format made. Especially, XVID videos, since its proprietary. Getting permission and licenses costs money. Many Linux distro's don't even come with MP3 playback for this reason (you have to download a package separately). And since MPEG-4 and H.264 are most popular and used video formats, that's what they went with.

I'd rather they look into a better player in terms of function than have them look into codecs. I am perfectly content in transcoding and converting my files to MP4. Heck, I already use MP4 to stream from my PC to my XBOX360 so it feels natural that I should also do the same for my 'droid device. Actually, I think it's time and makes sense that the entire scene move over to mp4 instead of sticking to old xvid / divx and mp3 content. Also, drop mkv. No real need for it.

As for the video player it's self, I'd rather have something that would at least let me play files right off from my shared network drives without having to copy the entire thing over to my phone first (stream without transcoding would be nice). Also I'd love to see something that would at the very least allow me to stretch or personalize video aspect ratio as some times I get 16:9 videos encoded as 4:3 and would pretty great if this could be changed in player instead of having to reencode the entire thing.

Don't they all? I know Meridian does, but I think being able to show special characters is something that has more to do with Android itself. Unless the developer chooses otherwise, they all use the same font face.

i'm not familiar with the api for reading media files, but yes it seems to be an android issue
i just downloaded meridian and it fails to show special characters as well
i'm running donut (had cupcake before) and i have at no point got any special characters to show properly from any mp3 file on any player
