Accessories ProClip Adjustable Car Holder works perfectly with an encased Evo

So I have my Evo mounted in the car now. Unfortunately ProClip doesn't make an up high mount for my MDX so Panavise did the trick on the dash mount side. I took the tilt swivel off of the adjustable iphone holder from ProClip which works perfectly with the Evo and the Innocase. The adjustable holder has a left and right half with the thumbscrews you see on the back. Didn't need the tilt swivel since it was angled well so I have less bulk to deal with. Makes for a cleaner look. The adjustable also doesn't interfere with any of the buttons or jacks on the Evo.

Wow this looks like a great solution! I love ProClip but didn't think I could get a Evo specific holder to work with my Seidio case.

Once adjusted how easily can you slide your Evo + case into the holder? Is it a snug fit? Can you swivel the holder so the phone won't fall out in landscape?

The fit is as tight as you make it. You can have it a touch loose or you can have it so it's a touch more of an interference fit which would be preferable if you're using it with the tilt swivel. The tilt swivel has a set screw as well so you can make it uber tight or just loose enough that you can swivel it to landsacape and back. As with any screw, it will loosen over time from going back and forth, but a quick turn to re-tighten takes seconds.

Thanks for the info. I'm familiar with ProClip's products. I've been using an iPod Touch holder and specific car mount for years. And they're all top quality. The adjustable holder is a great idea, I didn't know they made this product.

Many don't, and while I love getting emails every year or two from my customers when they upgrade phones, the adjustable is the smart way to go. Many are using skin cases or invisible shields too which makes the phone specific cases unusuable in most situations. Ones that have the velvet coating have often been shaved down by people to get it to work with the invisible shields (ZAGG, BSE) when they could just spend $5 more.

I'm holding out for a proclip evo mount. I love my swivel mount for my ppc-6800, proclip is simply the best. I emailed them to ask how long it will be before the evo models will be available and didn't get a date but they said it's being developed now. Hopefully they will make one with the built in power connection but with a usb tip on the cable instead of bare wires for hard wiring. Until then the evo sits in the ashtray, yikes.

ha, I really have no good place to sit my Evo in the car. I won't even fit in my cup holder. So for now it sits in the passenger seat until I get a good mount.

dbpaddler, tell me more about the Panavise mount. I've never really been satisfied with the location of the proclip mount on my 97 Monte Carlo. Looks like the Panavise would have better placement.

With the hole patterns were you able to screw the ProClip holder directly to the Panavise mount, or did you have to make modifications?

I'd most likely keep the tilt-swivel attached to the ProClip holder so I'm wondering if I could easily attach the tilt-swivel to the Panavise.

It's a good location. You have that big dash bezel to remove, but it doesn't seem too difficult based off the instructions. Better to have screws to remove than just clips that can more easily break.

The AMPS hole pattern is a standard 4-hole pattern in the industry. Both Panavise and ProClip utilize it so it's easy to mount one to the other. It's on the holder as well as the tilt swivel.

Here it is on ebay for $20, though I'd submit a best offer and see if you can shave a few dollars off of it.

Funny, the screen is so frickin big, I don't even see the need to rotate to landscape. Not worth the hassle while driving.

That's good to hear. My proclip mount covers the left vent, (less than ideal.) The Panavise is a tad bit lower so it would be nice to use the swivel to angle the phone slightly upwards for a better viewing angle.

I assume you mean mount. Proclip is definitely a good place to start for vehicle specific mounts. Some even have different options, (locations) for the mount.

I'm looking into Panavise upon dbpaddler's mention, and they seem very well made also.

Panavise probably has the 2nd largest selection of mounts next to ProClip followed by Kuda, then Bracketron and Pro-Fit. Bracketron and Pro-Fit are a similar style to Panavise. Basically they require you to remove the center dash bezel and a screw or two, usually on the radio mount. The dash mount fixes to those screws and you replace the bezel. Sometimes it's easy and sometimes not so much. You can easily break clips that keep it in place. Sometimes they are screwed in and the process is a little easier. It was a pain in the butt on my MDX, but I wasn't about to use a low console mount for something I look at quite often. I do use the low console mount for my Sirius Stiletto and it works well. I prefer things as high up as I can mount it without putting it on the dash. Blocking vents normally isn't an issue, and some cars just don't have nooks and crannies any place else but around the vents. Older cars tend to fall in this category because ProClip wasn't as creative then as they are now.

The big plus for the ProClip mounts is they require no removal of the dash and no screws. They fit into the crevices between panel pieces and come with a little crevice tool to facilitate. Most have a small barb so to speak to keep it locked in. In the case where gravity isn't your friend they do have a little strip of adhesive to help keep it in place. Good 3m stuff that holds really well, but doesn't leave a residue if/when you remove it.

I'm using the ProClip iPhone adjustable holder and it's great. There is a little bit of "front to back" (tilt in the holder) play but it's no big deal.

The only problem with the "custom fitted" Proclip holders is that they are SO perfectly fitted to the phone even a thin skin makes them fit too tight and tears the skin on the sides. They make a super (and expensive) product. I had a whole drawer full of "previously used" custom ones from long deceased devices I just threw out.

I tell many the adjustable holder will outlive many phones and quite a few cheapo adjustables.

I've played with the innocase, snap on cover and a bare Evo. You can get the front to back down to the slightest of movements. Add a touch more squeeze before tightening it up. Another thing I mention is to buy those black foam protector pads (dollar store, home depot, target) and cut them into some thin strips. Apply them towards the back of the grooves. Just a couple will do the trick to firm it up a bit too.

Also, I had originally not planned on getting any sort of skin/cover for the phone, but I can see some potential benefit in conjunction with the adjustable holder ... more friction for better grip, and that grip is on the skin rather than phone itself potentially reducing scuffs on the sides of the phone. Is that a reasonable assumption when using a silicone or rubberized skin in conjunction with the adjustable holder?

Same holder. The "a" is added since it's sold outside of the iphone section for more general use.

Any protection is going to be helpful in protecting the finish of a phone that continuously rubs against another surface. It's definitely a selling point for that cheap snap on case that's getting a lot of hoopla. As minimal of a case as you're going to get that could satisfy the naked crowd and offer just enough protection for those afraid to go naked. Helps it fill out the rails a touch nicer too and take out what minimal play is there when the phone is naked.

It should, you can adjust the holder to be as tight or loose as you want. Also with the tilt-swivel you can turn to landscape and angle the phone as you wish.

Just some fyi, at least I find it helpful. If you're using a bare phone and want to use it in landscape you're going to want a tighter fit. You are also dealing with bare plastic on the holder side so you might want to add a small layer of cushion. An easy way to do that is with those small foam protective pads. The ones I like are the small black square ones. They are a few bucks at most stores (cvs, home depot, ace hardware, walmart, target). They are thin, only a few millimeters thick. I take three of them and line the grooves so they just come over the sides of the grooves. Then put the phone in the holder and squeeze the sides together nice and tight and tighten down the thumb screws. Let it sit for a while. Gives the adhesive time to cure under pressure. Then you can loosen the holder a hair or two to make it easier to slide the phone in and out.

It helps protect the finish of the phone and gives it some friction against the phone to keep it in place in landscape mode.

Just a suggestion. It also tightens up the grooves a bit since it's generally made for a phone that's a little thicker since you'd normally have a case on it.

max width of the holder is 82mm. Width of the Evo is 66mm. So you're good on width. The depth of the rails should easily accommodate it as well.
