Help WIFI Why?

I am a newbie to smartphones so please bear with me.

Why would I want to use WIFI on my phone? When do I want to use it?

Is there an easy to click app to turn WIFI and GPS on and off?

the wifi uses less battery than the 3g radio and depending on isp, it should provide you higher bandwidth than vzw.

you would want to use it whenever you are in range of a wireless router.

yes there is a wifi widget you can place on your homescreen(press and hold any part of a empty home screen, choose widgets, choose wifi. whenever you use a wireless router for the first time, you will have to go into settings>wireless networks>wifi settings to connect your phone to the wifi router.

after the initial setup, it should connect automatically from your home screen widget. hope that helps. any questions, just ask

for future reference, there is a app called switchpro widget (by alei) than combines alot of switches into 1 widget. try it, im pretty sure you will like it

It seems as though certain things like MMS will only work through the network though and not WIFI????

yes pic and videos cannot be sent through mms on wifi. the phone will wait til youre back on the vzw network

One reason for wifi is sharing of file between other devices like your PC, Smartphones etc. Also tethering uses wifi, say your internet is down you can use tethering to connect 5 other computers to the internet. Go to settings>wireless & networks you can turn wifi off from there.

It's still on network for messages when using wifi.

I'm on wifi at home, benchmark at 11Mb down on the X, and I get txt messages all the time.

yes, sms text is fine. Multimedia messaging is not possible on wifi.

Edit: i actually just tried this and it in fact does send it.... by using the 3g service temporarily. once done, 3g turns off.

I use WiFi mainly at home because I live rural and I am in a signal dead zone... WiFi allows me to use "SOME" of my phones functions... Otherwise I would have to wait until I head into town or travel...

Sorta off topic but not really.... is there an app that when you turn on wifi it will toggle 3g off??

I thought it did toggle it off. i have noticed that it takes longer on the X for some reason to go off though.

That's actually because you are using a widget to turn wifi on. Turn wifi on in the settings and go to config and it will immediately grab wifi.

Wifi is also good if you are out of the country since this isn't a world phone. Can you say SIPdroid?

As stated wifi is important to share files on a LAN. It can also speed up gps positioning however the Moto chip is super fast.
