a few questions re android/ desire

Hi

im new to all this android smart phone thing and i just wanted to ask a few questions if anyone can help

with regards to the apps i have heard that they dont close down what do you have to do to close them?

also with the HTC friend stream does this always need to be contected to the internet to update? wont this use all your data on your contract?

Not a facebooker or twitterer so cant help with Friendstreams data usage.

Usually you can closed apps by holding the back button or sometimes there is an exit option under menu.

But yes FriendStream will need a data connection to be able to update.

Hi and welcome.

Android manages tasks so you don't need to close them. If you back out of them, android will essentially freeze them until you need to use them again.


You can set friend stream (well facebook sync) to sync at whatever intervals you want (well a choice of pre-set ones). so you can manually refresh or it will sync every 30 minutes, 1 hour, 3 hours etc. Its not syncing much data really, so it wont use much of the allowance.

You don't need to shut them down - Android handles dormant Apps really well. They don't use memory or battery they don't need. This is probably the biggest mistake us newbies make, leave them alone, it'll be fine.

It's not a lot of data, you can set the refresh-rate or turn it off either completely or when you're not on WiFi if you're that worried about using your data allowance.

They are apps that run in the background automatically killing non running programs. In my opionion they are not needed and just use battery\CPU. I had one on for about a week when I first got my Desire and it caused random probelms. Since uninstalled and everythings ok

+1 for this. Waste of resource and do the opposite of what they say in some cases.

Wrong question, the actual answer is that they don't need to be closed. Android is different than a PC! It manages open apps itself, technically speaking they are not really open in the traditional sense. Thats all a typical user needs to know really.

Now if you want to be an extreme hardcore power user, then the discussion can last all night

Anyway, this was something that really felt.... weird when I first got my desire.
It's my first android/smart phone so the first 3 days I was busy looking for the close button on apps like the Internet Browser

I'm not convinced android closes stuff down after use, my battery dies a whole lot quicker if i dont use my app killer. using 2.1

How do you know you are not using it? If it's installed, task killers often beaver away silently in the background. Consuming power and resources.

Like other users have found, if you uninstall it completely, you might find your phone works a whole lot better.

I've just deleted both Advanced Task Killer and Advanced Task Cleaner as they were screwing with my Maps app (!!!). The phone is much better without them.

It's annoying because the Task Killer was one of the first things I downloaded (if not the first) because I'd been told it was a "must have" - I'd say it's a "must haven't".

I've never had one on mine, but the whole "task killers make me late for work" thing happened in my home a while back.
