Im really looking at getting this phone. What I really need though is to have the ability to use my phone as a wifi router to use my laptop when needed. My current 2 year old samsung i760 is running an app called WM wifi router that is currently doing this, for free. To me this is a deal breaker if the phone cannot do this. I have looked everywhere on the interwebz and have not found no such info for this phone, please help.

When I joined Verizon, I asked about it, and got 3 different answers from, 3 different salesmen at the same store. All were for different pricing plans, and the final answer was that, "The Droid does not support tethering...right now".

Word on the street is that it does, via other apps. Apparently VZ will expect extra $$$.

I have not heard of this and also think that it might be difficult for someone to program. Right now it seems like when wifi is turned on 3g automatically turns off. Whoever develops this app would have to find a way to keep wifi and 3g on at the same time.

The only way you can (currently) connect to the internet from a computer through the Droid is via bluetooth or USB, both of which are discussed in various threads on this forum.

Please don't mention the i760, it makes me cry. I loved that phone. The Droid is the first time I've upgraded from a phone I didn't hate. I had it for 2 years.

I never found WM router to be all that stable. Maybe that developer will port it to android platform.

PDAnet DOES support BT for tethering now: PdaNet -- USB Tether/Bluetooth DUN for Android

PDAnet does not require root and it works great. June Fabrics is incredible and has been providing great products and support for years.

Yeah, PDAnet allows tethering through USB or BT.

Wireless tethering is completely different. It takes the 3G EVDO signal and broadcasts it using your phone's wireless card, in essence, transforming it into an access point.

PDAnet does not allow this! BT =\= wireless tethering.

Fabolous, knows exactly what im talking about, make the phone an access point or essentially a wifi router. Pdanet is great and all but you still need to have a usb cable attached to the laptop. So this phone has to be rooted in order to do this correct? Now i ask how soon can this phone be rooted if at all? Am i just better off with a htc tp2, or is this phones features that much better where it would just be worth waiting for it to be rooted?

Well the rooting of the DROID is being actively worked on over at alldroid.org. I am pretty confident that it will be accomplished by the end of this year, maybe sooner. Now the other thing is are there any apps that can do what WM Wifi router does? I know there is a wifi tether app for rooted Android phones but I don't think it makes your phone into a access point. If that is a true deal breaker for you then I would say go with something WinMo, but be careful with the TP2 as it has had a lot of signal issues and if your stuck on 1x then tethering will be pointless. Also the TP2 and the Diamond 2 have the EXACT SAME internals as the TP1 and Diamond 1 so you are basically just getting a bigger screen that tilts with a better keyboard, but a really ancient processor and so-so RAM/ROM. DROID is easily a better phone in all aspects except maybe the keyboard, but you also get a capacitive screen and a 16GB SD card, plus it's not WinMo.

how far away from your phone do you plan on having your laptop? unless you plan on having your phone in the other room, why not just plug it in via usb? a wired connection will always be superior to a wireless one.

btw, don't forget that wireless or wired, either way you are violating tos.
