So i took my phone back... just wanted to warn others

Hey all,

After going through two differnt phones with some serious flaws other then the GPS i started to worry about the QC being done on the Captivate. I asked my ATT rep if the 30 day was resetting everytime i turned in a broken device and was suprised to find out it was not. This means we have 30 days period to get a working device or we are going to get stuck with the samsung warrenty which will cuase insane delays/shipping issues(not to mention we will be getting refurbished devices! i didnt pay 300$ for a phone to get a used one!). I was able to return the device for a full refund but only becuase of this known GPS issue(which was not the reason i wanted to return the phone, but had to use this reason to avoid the restocking fee...). So if any of you are concerned with your phone i suggest returning it for a full refund before the GPS is sorted out... or you may get slammed with a restocking fee for a device that is not up to par. I really loved my Captivates... and i really wanted them to succeed but with all the issues floating around and the issue i myself was haveing... it just seems like a bad gamble... who knows how long it will take for these to start haveing hardware failures.... when the inital QC was this bad. Again i am not trying to bash Samsung they are a good company... with desent support... i just feel they really dropped the ball on this one.

This phone is no better or no worse than the other high end android smart phones on other carriers. Almost every high end android phone had one problem or another that was easily fixed with a software update. The GPS is a software problem, not a hardware one.

Yes, but Samsung is doing virtually nothing to make updates. Apple's almost at three updates for the iPhone 4 with bug fixes. Zip for the Captivate.

I had to exchange my first Captivate because of hardware issues (the soft keys were stuck), but my new one is sweeeeeeeet. I do feel your pain, I said to the AT&T clerk, if *this* one doesn't work, I am buying an iPhone.

For the GPS, to me, it is a non-issue...I just don't use GPS right now, but I can understand it being a non-starter for some folks.

Yep, and also the iPhone 4 couldn't hold a phone call. I think a cell phone not being able to hold phone calls requires more immediate action than a GPS fix.

There's no denying that Samsung needs to push out faster updates. I'm not even asking for Froyo, all I want is bug fixes.

I had an iPhone 4 for 2 weeks. It dropped 5 calls in 2 days (all calls were dropped within 2 mins of answering them.) I returned my iPhone 4 on the second day... I loved my old iPhones. Why would I talk shit about something I loved for 2 years if it wasn't for a reason?

I don't think it's harsh - I'm thinking about doing the same thing. How are you exactly sure that it's not a hardware issue for the GPS? Unless Samsung announces that there is a software fix for the GPS/Location accuracy problem, I will be returning my phone as well. I'll have to go back to my old iPhone 3G until there's a solution for it. (hopefully the software fix will be better than making the GPS bars bigger )

And yes, GPS is that important to me. I frequently like to know what's around and the fact that the location services have sometimes put me a mile away from my physical location is unacceptable.

I have personally contacted Samsung (yesterday) level 3 support. I waited for over an hour. I was told that they are aware of the problem but cannot guarantee if/when they'll be able to fix it. For me, they have 3 weeks.

I think this is only a valid argument if the announcement was from SamsungUSA. Who knows when we'll be getting it. Plus, I'd be happy with 2.1 if my location services worked.

That's Froyo. Nobody has proven the GPS update is in 2.2 - it's better to take the phone back now, and wait a bit. At least now, you CAN get your money back. If you wait more than 30 days, you're screwed.

4.1 is still in beta, which will probably come out within a month.

Giving out free bumper cases is not a fix, its a bandaid, and they still have not fixed the proximity sensor, which annoyed the crap out of me.

The iPhone 4 flaws made the phone not fully usable as an actual PHONE. While the main captivate problem, for me, is the GPS issue, and does not affect my everyday usage.

If you follow the Samsung Galaxy S i9000 forum, you see that Samsung UK actually releases a new beta build of firmware EVERY WEEK.

They wont drop the ball on this phone, they have spent too much money and time on this WORLD phone.

4.0.1 also corrected smaller bugs. The bars was just the main feature.

For the last time, most people ARE NOT TALKING ABOUT FROYO WHEN THEY WANT AN UPDATE. Perhaps I need to bold it, color it, write it in italics, I'll do as whatever it takes to get that understood. I want simple bug fixes such as SMS placement, odd lag, MMS problems etc. Not Froyo.

I agree, it'd be pretty stupid of Samsung to not support these phones considering all the aggressive marketing and putting these on all 4 major carriers. I just find the lack of support from Samsung thus far unsettling.

I technically was not eligible to upgrade until 10/16, but they gave me an early upgrade for the Captivate. I got it for $124.99.

I bought the Captivate on 7/22. Had the GPS issue. I exchanged it for another Captivate on 7/28. This phone also had the GPS issue..

Today I returned it, at the local AT&T store I bought it at. No questions asked, full refund.

Hopefully there will be a fix for people that are having the GPS issue, but for now I did not want to take a chance within the 30 day return policy of something happening to the phone as in dropping it or something.

I will sit back and wait to see what comes of this.

This is a very nice fun with many great features.
People that have the Captivate with no GPS issues or don't care about the GPS function have a great phone.

It hasn't even been 2 weeks, just because froyo is coming in sept does not mean that we will be void of any updates until then. Regardless, there is no reason to get so antsy about no updates 12 days after release.

There are no guarantees either way with a new device. Samsung is a quality brand imo and I've been happy with them in the past. I would think that this unit is selling enough to warrant some support and hoping it gets it. It'd also be in Samsung's best interest to do so. Honestly though, I'll be keeping it even sans-updates because I have no issues with mine other than the spotty gps.

I'm not annoyed by the lack of updates so far, I'm annoyed by the lack of response from Samsung. I emailed them a while back and they said they didn't know of any problems, and didn't know if/when there would be fixes.

WOW, idk where to even begin. Read like three threads down and you'll see the one about the galaxy firmware being leaked. Patience man!!!!

Plus with the carrier competition on the galaxy line I bet there will be big pressure to push out updates.

Firmware was not leaked. Samsung released it. It probably does not contain all the proprietary drivers meaning we will still need the actual update to leak for the hacking community to work on it.


I'm trying to not be impatience, I just want what I paid for before my 30 days runs up. I'd just like a simple "Look forward to a bug fix within the next 2 weeks" from Samsung. A conformation that they are working on it.

Samsung is putting out FOUR phones on FOUR different carriers, two of which still have yet to be released before they can fully focus on updating and fixing bugs, just my opinion... i do understand the 30 days to wait though, because that is kinda trapping.... im still thinking of returning my Captivate because of the incoming calls lag i experience at times, but im going through a few solutions on my own before i give up, because other than that, i really do love this phone....

Thats funny, I told the ATT rep that the gps didnt work and it had horrible battery life and they still charged me a restocking fee of $35 bucks! You must have had to raise hell if they didnt charge you. I didn't think there was a way around it, damn now I feel abused

But yes, I did return mine. I gave it a fair shot but the GPS thing totally killed it for me. I wanted to like it, and there are many things I did like about the Captivate. But, I needed something more reliable and familiar, I went to the iphone 4. I came from a 3g. And I have to say, I'm loving it. The gps locks in within seconds, its quick. No dropped calls. I have the barely there case from casemate, and it solves the reception issue. Its not as bad as people make it out to be. But I hope for all your guys' sake that they come out with a fix for it soon. I feel like they would try to screw everyone and bring out an update past the 30 days so that youre actually stuck with it. But who knows...

Anyways, thats my two cents. Sorry if it seems fan boy-ish, but I did give the captivate a good week and a half of testing before I decided it wasn't what I truly wanted, or expected.

Exactly... I can't see them really tossing any immediate updates out until they even launch the full line of Galaxy S phones. While it sucks for us, I'd imagine initial distribution is their primary concern right now.

That realization hit me yesterday...I DO love this phone. I got my aurora live wall paper going, fancy widget, and my favorite 8 apps underneath, with ADW taking care of much of the lag...it really looks beautiful, more so than any iPhone ever could.
