Get a DX or wait for something else?

So, If I could get your guy's/gal's opinions.... I know there's a lot of intelligent and tech savvy members here.

Ok, So I'm coming from a Storm 1 which Ive had for the last 22 months. I'm thoroughly sick of it.....

1. Should I go ahead and get a DX now? Will something else come out while I'm waiting for it to be shipped?

2. Should I wait for a different android phone (Merge/Fascinate/Scorpion/ETC....) to come out? I get my NE2 in about 2 months.

3. Should I sign a 2 year contract so that when I'm due for another upgrade in 2012 LTE will be rolled out and have its bugs fixed?

4. Or just a 1 year contract? Money is an issue for me (Full time College Student, no job, only G.I. Bill money) but I could probably swing a 1 year contract instead of a 2 year.

And feel free to expand on anything I haven't considered.

And I know whatever I buy, there will be something newer and better soon to follow, But I've had my Storm 1 for almost 2 years now... I should be able to handle it. :p

yeah, as soon as im eligible to upgrade every year (with the my verizon yearly upgrade) i get the best phone available. it came on july 14 and there was the dx waiting for order the next day so it worked out.

i wouldn't wait for something new and better to drop, because there is always something new and better. get the best thing available now and for the year you have a phone that will still be powerful and good enough that you won't be dying to ditch it. Granted by thanksgiving ill prolly be wishing i could jump on the vzw htc evo-like phone or something but if id waited id have had to put up with 4-5 months more of my awful bb tour.

Really, it just depends on your own preference.

I LOVE my x, running 2.1 and 2.2.

HOWEVER,

As you can see, HTC is releasing a new phone that sorta mimics the DX and looks like an iPhone (IMO). You will no doubt see phones like the DX with even more power come in the future after the success the DX has had.

Realistically, with a "Death" date of March '11, I would just wait and see what these phone companies have up their sleeves for Christmas time. You know that a BUNCH of android phones are going to be releases, and I'm pretty sure they will be the "Gift of Choice" for many parents.

All the best,
Eric

I'm in the same boat as you, kind of. My NE2 kicked in a month ago, and my Verizon contract expires in mid-November. I've just about settled on the DX. But now that a release date for the Fascinate is out and the DX is still on a 2-week back order, I've decided to at least wait to get a hands-on to see how the Fasc feels. I'm hoping that by the 8th or 9th or whenever the Fasc gets to stores, the backlog on the wait for the DX will be shorter, and I'll be able to get a phone around the same time as if I ordered a DX now, anyway (assuming that they have enough Fasc in stock to meet demand).

But I've thought about just waiting until November, too, to see what the holiday season brings on all networks -- that would give me maximum flexibility to get whatever seems to be the latest and greatest. Also, waiting might cause the prices on the DX and/or Fasc to come down a bit, in light of new models and such. Although, I'm not really crazy about waiting 3 months for a new phone in order to save $50 on the purchase price.

Really, I'm not too tech-savvy, and just want a useful and fun device -- I'm positive that the DX, Dinc, and upcoming Fascinate will be way more phone then I'll ever use. But it is fun to have options.

If you want something now, go get something now. If you keep waiting for the next best phone to vcome out, you'll still be rocking your Storm 1 when you retire. The DX is out now, and if you wait for the next phone, it will probably be better. But when it comes out, there will be another better phone coming out after it, and if you wait for that... you see where this is going? Just decide when you want a new phone, then go get the best phone for you at that time.

I think Motorola builds a better quality phone than HTC or Samsung. I've had them all. The toughest smart phones are still RIMs but then you get antiquated everything else. Motorola is second in my book. The phones aren't flimsy like the HTCs. Samsung is hit or miss on implementation on a complete product. I think the X is the best phone on the market, any carrier. Better than the Droid 2 which is newer. Iphones are pretty well built but you get ATT and the i4 isn't all that sturdy if you drop it.

It depends on when the next phone is coming out. Its its coming out in a month or less, wait just to have one more choice to choose from.

See, u about to get a phone and LTE phones will be coming out either at the end of the year or early next year. If your NE2 is in Oct, I dont know if I would get anything thats out now. Its hard to say.

An LTE phone is a major upgrade compared to anything out or coming out that isnt LTE. The LTE phones might will dual core chips, better gpu's, better screens, etc. Unless u go to Sprint and get the EPIC or EVO thats already 4G. (they have specs similar to other phones out now, 4G and front facing cameras are only things that really separates them from all the rest)

And if the past few months is any indication, I recommend 1 year contracts from now on for everybody...lol

Sorry to hear about your loss.

Honestly you can wait forever for the next big phone. Technology is always evolving. What was great one day may be obsolete 3-4 months down the road. My Advice is to get something now if you really want or need it, if you think you can wait, then wait. Something big may come out soon, but then something big will come after that, and after that.

I have to add a some points about LTE:

First, I saw an interview with a Verizon VP that said the LTE phones won't start hitting the market until next year. This year will only see LTE data cards for PCs, so if you are waiting for an LTE phone, expect to wait half a year or so.

Second, you need to consider the market you are in. The LTE roll out will be phased in. Small markets like the one I'm in won't have service until the end of 2012 or even the beginning of 2013. There is absolutely zero reason for customers in my boat to worry about getting an LTE phone right now when we won't have service to connect it to until we are already on our NEXT phone.

Third, you said you are going to school right now, think about the timing of when you graduate. Will you be staying in that same market? If not, then also consider LTE availability in the areas you are considering moving to.

I give you my condolences for the tragic loss of your friend. With your phone issue... there will always be better phones if you wait out for them, especially ones that are coming out in a few months and such. I understand where you're coming from with the Storm 1. I couldn't wait to get rid of mine. I would say that the Droid X is a really great phone. It'll be even better when Froyo is officially released very soon. Perhaps try waiting out longer? It really depends on how much patience you have.

I feel your pain, i had a bb pearl for the last two years and just about lost my mind when the incredible came out. Jumping ship was never an option cause i'm happy with vzw service. I hesitated on the incredible and then when i wanted one it was sold out, i heard about the dx and pulled the trigger the first morning it was out. I'm really happy with the dx except mine has a battery life issue that hopefully will be resolved with 2.2. If vzw releases the iphone in the coming future that might be something to consider because it has excellent resolution. Overall 2 thumbs up for my dx, it is a huge leap forward from the crackberry!

Thanks for all of your suggestions.

I think I'm pretty set on ordering a DX. I've mainly only heard good things about it. Wish I would have waited and done some researchbefore jumping into my Storm .
I think if I could handle keeping my Storm 1 for almost 2 years with all the newer and better phones that have been coming out, I'll be able to handle having a DX for 2 years :).
And as someone suggested to me elsewhere, I could always sell my DX on EBay or Craigslist and use the money to buy whatever comes out next.
I've decided that now is a better time to buy vs. buying later and suffering with my S1. If I suffer with my S1 for a little longer then buy one in a couple months (Christmas time?), then soon after I plop down cash for it, they'll start releasing LTE Phones. At least I'll have a great phone for about a year and upgrade to an LTE phone when they start rolling out in 2011 sometime. I live in Phoenix so I'm hoping that we'll be one of the initial LTE markets.

Thanks again,
ASC

p.s. Thank you all for your support and condolences about my friend. After talking about it with several friends, we're more upset with him that he went through with it. He didn't try to reach out to anyone for help with his problems. He would have gotten support from us with whatever he was going through. In the end he only ended up hurting his friends and especially his family.

Honestly, If you like the features of the DX then I'd get the DX. If you wait you might as stay waiting because ever freaking day there's a new android phone on the market. If you like the features then get it. If you're still waiting for something else then wait. But always hoping that there will be a better handset in a few months is crazy because there always will be but then when you buy that it'll be an old unit too with a better model after that. The BB Storms are horrible. The DX is leagues above it.

As far as going to the iPhone 4. It's a sexy phone but with the issues it's been having and Lord Jobs at the helm I'd stay away. Android for now is an open standard which is what makes it great. Totally hackable and not ruled under an iron fist. Although with Oracle chomping down on Google and the Sun JAVA patents who knows what will become of Android. But for the mean time. Android is the way to go.

If you want a good handset with a physical keyboard go with the Droid 2 or the Droid Pro. Otherwise the Droid X is great.
