Battery drains exceedingly quickly

Hello all,

So yesterday was the first day I used my Hero "officially". I took it off the charger at about 10am and by around 7:30pm it had about 20% left. Not fantastic, but it seemed ok. Last night, I charged it via USB (forgot the charger part) and this morning when I went to take it off the charger, I noticed it was completely dead. I switched it over to another USB cable and after a minute or so, I was able to boot it up and get it going again. I was only able to let it charge for about an hour before I had to leave and go to class, so when I took it off this morning it was around 52%. I didn't do much with it on the way or during class, simply tried stream a little music via subsonic (only for about 10-15 minutes) and sent maybe two text messages. Getting to class (the phone had been off the charger about an hour at this point) I was already at 46% and by the end of class I was at 22%. A quick trip to Wal-Mart for a spare charger and the battery was below 10%. From taking it off the charger to finishing at Wal-Mart was about a span of 2:30 hours. Draining over 40% of my battery in a couple of hours when the phone was mostly idling with the screen off seems absolutely ridiculous.
I have the phone overclocked with SetCPU which is set to go from 245 to 710 when it's above 30% and when it's below, it clocks itself down to something like 195 and 490. When the screen is off, it's 125 or so to 245. About midway through class I killed SetCPU just to see if that was my problem, but it didn't appear to be as my battery seemed to drain just as quickly. I don't use a task killer extensively, only to check what applications are running in the background and maybe kill something that won't shut down. But, when I did check, after Wal-Mart, I had an application called "My Uploads" running. I wasn't sure what that was, but I left it running anyway.

Any advice or tips? This really only seems to have happened since I put Subsonic on the phone, but again, I only used it for about 15 minutes today.

Thanks

i have a couple suggestions. now personally i use a task killer, and i find that task killers are similar to religious preference, some people swear by it, others denounce it. that's your choice. i use one and it kills a ton of apps running in the background.

another item to consider is your environment. specifically the class room and walmart. both these types of buildings are known for having poor reception. poor reception will kill your battery very quickly if it's trying to do it's thing and it's always searching for signal.

my last suggestion is background data. under settings>apps & sync>background data and/or autosync. this way it uses minimal amounts of data, and only syncs when you want it to.

there's other little tweaks, but i don't find them to have as major of an impact, such as turning the brightness of your screen down. some even say having a black background as opposed to a white one will save power going on the same idea.

i hope you find this helpful.

Followed the advice in that other thread, including getting rid of the task killer (which I wasn't too big a fan of anyway) and things are looking up. I've been off the charger for almost four hours now and I've still got 70% left after some light to moderate use, texting, streaming music/podcasts and writing some notes. Hopefully I'll see more improvements when I get the new battery.

Have you tried wiping battery stats in recovery?

I wasn't aware of this. How exactly does this improve battery life? Or does it just make it more likely to show proper battery status/percentage?

Shows proper battery usage.

Charge phone to 100%, then boot into recovery and wipe the battery stats and then reboot. Let the phone die to 0% and the charge back to 100% (don't take off of charger). See if this helps, worth a try (may take a full day if you are willing)
