If you had the choice today...

Sigh. Another thread like this :p

Epic!

  1. Speed. Games run SO much better. The browser is much smoother when panning\zooming. Everything just goes faster. Games I couldn't play on my EVO are laughable on the Epic. It's actually a lot faster on 2.1 than the EVO is with 2.2.
  2. Keyboard. This makes emulator gaming so much better. I also use it to type various things every now and again.
  3. The screen is gorgeous. Games\movies look so much better.
  4. Plays 720p\1080p MKV movies without even converting them. Also plays divx\xvid AVI files. No other phone I know can do this.
  5. DLNA is actually a useful feature. I never used HDMI on my EVO. Damn cord....
  6. Battery life is definitely better with my Epic.
  7. Camera is on par with the EVO... sometimes better.

To be honest... I don't miss much of anything from my EVO. Maybe the large screen size. Oh and the GPS. But so far my Epic hasn't failed to get me via google navigation.

Here are the advantages of the Epic:

1) Fastest CPU on an Android phone, the 1ghz Hummingbird

2) The fastest GPU on an Android Phone, PowerVR SGX540

3) Combined accelerometer and gyroscope with SIX AXIS SENSOR!!!

4) Bluetooth 3.0

5) Super Amoled Display with highest contrast ratio of any screen

6) Epic has Gorilla Glass, Evo doesn't. Evo is prone to shattered screens.

7) Lightweight, and not bulky even with the keyboard!

8) 4inch screen is the perfect balance between form and function

Downfall:
It appears GPS could use even more improvements.

BETTER DISPLAY - EPIC

Other than EVO fanboys, it is pretty much undeniable at this point that the EPIC's Super AMOLED display is much better than the EVO's display. The EVO's doesn't suck by any means, but it looks washed out, with less depth in color when compared side-by-side with the EVO. The EVO is .3" larger though.

FASTER GPU - EPIC

This is not an opinion, just a simple fact that has been proven with benchmark tests. Faster GPU = faster graphics processing = smoother gaming/video.

KEYBOARD - EPIC

The physical keyboard is one of the best on the market. I love that it has dedicated number keys. No more holding 'alt' or 'shift.' If you prefer a virtual keyboard, Swype is preloaded on EPIC and works beautifully as well.

MEDIA STREAMING - EPIC

Epic 4G supports DLNA, which makes it very easy to stream wirelessly both to and from the phone. HTC EVO allows Media Streaming via HDMI.

CAMERA - EPIC / EVO

The Epic has a 5-MP camera with autofocus and a single flash, while the Evo has an 8-MP camera with autofocus and a dual LED flash. Both devices are capable of recording in HD and have front-facing cameras. Some believe that even though the EVO has an 8-MP to 5-MP advantage, that the quality of the picture is as good, or better on the EPIC. I think both are excellent for still shots, but the EPIC edges out the EVO when it comes to video recording.

BATTERY LIFE - EPIC

This is easily the most lope-sided comparison. The EPIC's battery life is so much better than the EVO's it is a joke.

USER INTERFACE - EVO

This is basically HTC's Sense UI v. Samsung's Touchwiz. Most agree that Touchwiz is well, lacking at best. Sense does have some cool features that add a lot to the overall experience. Also, keep in mind that most hard-core users dump manufacturer UI's and prefer customizing everything via rooting.

KICK STAND - EVO

Personally I think the kickstand on the EVO is a joke and something that I never used even once. For what it's worth, it does have one though, and the EPIC does not!

These are just my opinions, take them with a grain of salt! But I owned and have spent quality time with both of them. I'm not some geek on a blog making shit up here! Overall, I have to say the choice is obvious, EPIC all the way! I haven't had one problem of any sort with my EPIC. I have not had a single Force Close error, nor have I had to do a battery pull. All of those things were several times a day occurrences on my EVO(s).

you have great points.. I am still in consideration of which to get.

but you left out other points of interests.

1. GPS

2. size of screen

3. development support

4. manufacture support

5. strength of signals on radios

6. HTC builds past devices with parts that work together as a whole much better than the sum of the individual parts. Much better than samsung's past.

i am sure we all can come up with points that help either side of this discussion...

it is each person's personal tastes that that can put all these points in order of thier own ranking importance. then make their own personal decisions. I am here to get more info so that I can make my own personal choice.

I have to remind people the power in numbers. Evo is on 1 carrier, sprint in the US. The Epic is a Samsung Galaxy S phone. These phones are on practically every single carrier around the world on every single continent. That is massive.

If you can't find a resoultion to your problem here, you can visit the Vibrant forum, or the Galaxy S forum, or the Captivate forum, or the Fascinate forum.

Trust me, this Phone is Epic.

You can always get an Evo if you really need the kickstand, just make sure you don't try to use the phone while the kickstand is up, the phone will fall flat on its face, then even from a 2 inch drop, the screen will shatter. Did I mention the Epic has gorilla glass?

Well, I had the choice today and I went with the epic.

My reasoning really came down to keyboard vs no keyboard. I really hate touchscreen typing. The epic keyboard isn't even all that good (my tp2 murders this thing), but it gets the job done.

Everything else is point counter point. Its really about preference. Evo has bigger crispier screen, epic has more vibrant less accurate colors, evo has fm radio (yes I did use it!), epic has faster processor, evo has kickstand that I already miss, epic has buttons that I already love, etc.. all preferences, not to mention better xda support on the evo, and the build quality is more solid. Still no keyboard.

They could make a 3ghz evo and I wouldn't care, I just want my damn kb lol

DLNA should not be a deal breaker or consideration; the EVO can be DLNA enabled with iMediaShare.

Having said that I have the same dilemma in choice but I have a couple months to decide so hopefully there will be more info on something else coming out. If the only new one is the Hero 2, though, I'm back to my choosing because it's size will kill it for me. I say that now, but maybe the AMOLED screen on the Hero2 will do it.. who knows.

I've used both phones and neither one sings to me -- that makes the choice tougher. I know I'm in the Epic forum so I'll get chided, but Samsung phones have a reputation/history of looking and feeling cheap. The Epic is certainly an improvement on that reputation, but that reputation is hard to ignore; however if you're upgrading every year, maybe that's not as much of a consideration as it used to be.

Keep in mind that much of the improvements on the EVO came a few weeks after the release in the form of updates; the battery life is not near the problem as it was in the beginning, but it will never live it down. There's no telling what improvements will come to the Epic either.

Like someone said up there, there will always be a new Android phone around the corner; the advancements are coming fast and furious.

No, I wasn't much help, but wanted to make sure and throw the DLNA comparison under the bus. :)

Owned both and I'd stay with the EPIC.

Reasons:

Screen
Call Quality
Speed (wait till this thing gets 2.2)
Video Playback
Camera (night and day better on the EPIC)
Battery Life (on mine at least)
I like the ergonomics better
Slide out keyboard
Fits in my pocket and hand better as it isn't a squared of rectangle
Feels lighter.

EVO development boomed simply because it was Sprints first high end Android phone.

EPIC is by far the better phone of the 2 in almost every single way and its only running 2.1

Epic is faster, screen is more responsive, 4G signal is better, Screen is far better, clearer and brighter, camera in my opinion is much better. Speaker both in earpiece and in speakerphone is much clearer and definitely LOUDER. Has more text input options. Much better video recording, gaming, video replay way better

The list goes on and on..... Its a no brainer EPIC

this is the epic forum section. The same question on the Evo forum would garner 90% Evo. We have them side by side and are testing them these past coupe of weeks.

Notes from real world use:

Gaming: advantage Epic

Keyboard: serious advantage epic

User interface: substantial Advantage Evo,

Display: slight advantage Epic. Evo's is larger so even with same resolution easier to read for people over 40. Epics colors look crisper, although there is a marked blue shift and no pure white.

Apps: Advantage Evo

Company support: Evo. HTC's aftermarket ( bug fixes, updates) is proven positive and Samsungs is historically terrible.

GPS: substantial advantage Evo

GPU: advantage Epic

Media Streaming: advantage evo. It has HDMI while epic does not. HDMI make for easy showing of raw videos on TV. The epic advantage with DNLA evaporated now that a few steps to enable it

Likely user base: advantage Epic

Battery life: no notable difference

Audio: Slight advantage Evo

RF strength: Advantage Evo

Camera: Slight advantage to epic, not due to mega pixels but do to dual flash
