Help "Low on space" phone/application storage notification

Why should we have to do this if we have SO MUCH FREE SPACE either on the phone or the SD CARD??

Why can't we just shift things around if we needed to, which we dont because we have so much space.

This is off my head but the reason i believe this happens is cause they dont want one app taking up all the memory.. So if u use lets say internet so much it can save images just like a regular browser does on a comp.. u need to delete this info.. So they do this to help prevent u from having one prog that eats up all ur memory.. I know some people dont like that but thats probably how they set it up.. I am just saying this on my opinion. I have over 20 apps on my phone.. I have never gotten this message only once and thats cause of stupid google voice freezing on me.. I want the damn older version!!!

EDIT - I'm still getting low space now at 339MB free...I've never gotten it this low before though. Wonder what the issue is now?

So I've been a victim of this problem like many people and I did something counter-intuitive that ended up finding the solution. I remembered I never had a problem before Froyo and how people had this issue at varying storage levels. Taking a wild guess, I moved any and ALL apps that were on the SD card back to the phone.

Yes makes no sense right? Well guess what, it works!! It seems the Froyo build we have on our phones (I'm running Stock 2.2) has some nasty bug in App2SD that causes this issue. Want proof?

I was always getting the error at around 430-450MB free recently. Randomly of course.

Now? after moving all SD apps back to phone I'm down to 345MB with no issue. I even installed Fennec (was always a hassle before) straight on phone and ran it without getting the notification!!!

Hallelujah - this issue was pissing me off but I'm glad there's a solution that's this simple.

I recommend the following steps:

1. Make sure you aren't getting the low on space notification now
2. Go to Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications -> SD Card tab
3. GO into any and each app you have on SD card and hit Move to Phone
4. Verify the SD card tab is empty

You should be good to go. Enjoy!

The issue was there prior to Froyo. Good tip otherwise.

So I found the problem according to Root Explorer the /data/data directory where apps store data is only sized to 150MB. I currently have 132 used and 17MB free. meanwhile the /data/app directory is what the phone reports which for me is 345. So basically I can continue installing apps as long as they don't use up the space in /data/data

that is a good find, not sure what we can do about it though. I browsed thru apps installed in that directory but the ones i looked at could not be "moved to SD card"

Okay, had this same problem, and think I found a solution. It's definitely a HTC Mail problem. I reset my phone and restored my Yahoo acct through Mail. I set my parameters to download "All" of my email. After an hour or so, I got the same message. I checked the Applications and sorted by Memory, and at the top is Mail with over 100 MB. I'm 99% sure it's because I chose "All" instead of "last 30 days" or something similar, AND because I'm using the crappy HTC Mail app.

I went in and "cleared" the Mail application, so it destroys all knowledge of my Yahoo account and all is well. I will now attempt to use a different 3rd party Mail app instead of the HTC Mail app. I think that will solve my issue.

I had this hit a few days ago and it drove me insane as it stops all email from coming through.

like most people here I had a TON of room left on my phone and my SD card (over 90% free) and the phone memory was at 599 mb available.

I went through all of my apps and none of them were using much memory
I removed my email account from the HTC mail program and deleted google earth (even though I hadn't used it in months) and now the message is gone.

go figure.

Makes no sense to me to be honest but it's extremely annoying.

Solved for me. My Incredible was driving me crazy with low space. I was sure that the OTA to 2.2 would fix it so I held in there. It seemed to get worse after 2.2. The next day, in frustration, I deleted all of my email accounts, installed-K-9 mail and crossed my fingers. Since that day my low on space has been gone.

I have multiple POP email accounts and have them set to leave the mail on the server. I suspect that is what chokes the Android mail client. At least for me, K9 mail has been a permanent solution. Two thumbs up for K-9.

Here's the thing, does it really make a difference? I had it for a little while before I did a factory reset. Sure its annoying to see the notification, but until there's a more concrete fix, does it really matter? You AREN'T actually low on space.

I've had 3 incredibles and I keep having this issue the main problem for me is I can't open up my text messages. Now that's annoying.

And yes I've deleted apps, moved everything off my SD card, cleared caches, etc etc

Just had my first episode of this issue come up about an hour ago. Phone has a TON of free memory and storage (SD card too). This is entirely unacceptable, especially if the notification causes emails/texts to stop coming through.

I reset the phone (just turned it on and off) and it seems to have gone away...but still, this shouldn't be something we are dealing with.

I've had this happen twice. Both times I ended up doing a factory reset to get rid of the Low On Space notification, despite there was plenty of space. Reading through many forum topics, I really believe it is the HTC MAIL app that triggers it. I no longer use it. Plus, with the Froyo update, the HTC Mail app inadvertantly deletes the mail off your server, regardless of your setting (yes, they are aware of the problem).

This erroneous notification is the only problem I've really had with my DInc. (But it has pissed me off a couple of times!)

i had this problem recently and like many people i started removing programs even though i had plenty of space. the issue kept returning until i uninstalled newsroom which was using 53mb. i've since reinstalled newsroom and the low space error has yet to return. i don't use twitter, facebook or htc mail. i've also disabled all syncing except for gmail.

this is a serious problem that needs to be addressed. i can confirm that emails fail in both directions under the low space warning.
