The Modern-Tech thingy works great, it was initially bought for Hero and survived quite a lot abuse. Good value for money.

As to the first post - this will fall apart within few bumps on the road. Had a similar one and it lasted a week.

I recieved my in car holder this morning. It's one of the Modern-tech type which Pencheven provided the Amazon link for.

Looking at the photos (same photo everywhere) this car holder from amazon looks like it just grips the phone from the sides. Can anyone confirm that it supports the phone from the top and bottom too? or is it going to slide out each time i press the power button to unlock it?
also, does it allow room for the charge cable?

You probably cant see it in the photo, but there are little legs at the bottom which flip out, allowing the phone to rest on the bottom before you grip it to the sides. There isn't anything holding it on the top, however I've been using it over all manners of bumps etc and it hasn't budged.. Its pretty rock solid..

Theres more than enough space for your connectors, and as I said before, with the phone jack and power at the bottom, the phone's well suited as a SatNav

If the HD is anything like the Standard Desire I recommend you look for an air vent mount. Using google maps navigation draws around 750ma. A good charger supplies 1000ma (and you need a good one or it will not keep up) combine that with a windscreen mount on a hot day = overheat and shutdown or on occasion meltdown!

Got it today and fitted it. Tucked nicely out of the way down in the bottom right hand corner of the screen (right hand drive as I'm in the UK!). Seems a lot sturdier then the previous one I had (one of the flexi-arm ones bought from Halfords) but not been out on the road yet.

I got this and tried this today. First journey was OK. It held the phone fine. I removed it from the screen and for the second journey it refused to attach to the windscreen. I will try it again tomorrow.

Having used a Tom Tom 550 I find it's mount sucker very good. It attaches to the screen easily. I think I'll get the official HTC mount when it comes in stock next month. It looks simpler and more compact as well as have an integrated USB attachement.

thanks I'll give it a shot...I remove the mount each time I leave the car so if in the long run I need to keep cleaning the screen and mount then I know I am going to get fed up and opt for the genuine one.

It does look good, but it should be for 5x what I paid for mine .... But how about a DHD with a case of any sort? Particularly one of the 'skin'-type cases. Would that still fit or do you have to take the case off first?

It does look good, yes. If anything, it needs a longer neck but other than that, it's a lovely piece of kit.
The sucker is especially strong, as others have said.
It won't fit in the holder with any sort of skin or sock - it's already a tight fit.
A quick note about the plug - the bit that goes into the bottom of the handset when it's in the holder - not only does it tilt forward so that it lines up with the handset during insertion, but it slides sideways, presumably to accommodate phones that have their socket in a slightly different place.
