2011 Sprint Lineup?

We are thinking of switching to sprint and going with droid phones from our iPhones. We are not huge fans of their current lineup (the EVO and whatever the new Samsung amoled is called). If the EVO had the Samsung screen we'd be in heaven. Anyway, we are wanting to make the jump around the new year (girlfriend can get $20/mo "all you can eat" plans from her new promotion) and we were wondering what cool new phones were coming out for the provider. We'd be willing to wait a bit for the right phone. but ould probably just go with EVOs if that was our only choice.

Not sure. There are a few things out there that people have hypothesized about, and others that have been announced but no one knows what carrier they are going to...

However, I think it's safe to speculate that there will be another in the line of keyboardless HTC Androids (Hero->Evo->???), but I would guess that it might have the HTC equivalent of the SAMOLED... which sounds like exactly what you are looking for.

But that's just me speculating.... Though not at all unreasonably (at least, I don't think it is).

So is there any prototype out there that would fit this description? Sorry, I haven't followed android, but now plan to. I guess I am wondering what the potential wait time for this device would be. If we are talking close to a year we may as well settle with what we have now. If we are talking a few months, we should/could probably hold out

So the optimus S will be a Sprint phone? I had seen it, but didn't find any information confirming or denying this.

EDIT: I found more info. But a 600mhz processor? Going backwards from what we have isn't relly an option

I just don't think I like the slide-out keys. From what I read it might not be keys, it might be a speaker bar... which I find to be even more lame...

Yeah, I kind of agree, BUT you don't have to use the slider, and the ideas posted about the specs have me very interested in it. I know that there aren't a ton of known phones coming for Sprint, but I have this feeling we are going to have some new options to choose from in the coming few months. (purely speculation, btw, but I can hope, right?)

True that it doesn't need to be used, but you can't argue that it doesn't make the phone unnecessarily thick. We'd hate to get phones that are nearly twice as thick as they need to be so that a feature we never use can be added...

Looking at some vids, I am not a real fan of that ohone either (aside from the price). I guess my dream is an EVO with a slightly smaller but higher quality screen :/

As far as a comparison to the transform, my understanding is that it has more to do with the flavor of android each is running (2.2 v 2.1) and not directly correlated with the core clock.

I suppose this is a good time to add that we want something that we can load newer flavors of android on quickly. One thing we love with the iPhone is that on launch we get the newer OS. With a lot of android phones it looks like we often get stuck waiting for some sort of tweak to come out. We want something with the greatest chance for updates throughout the life of the phones (which we are willing to make 12-18 months).

Looks like the gf might spring for the optimus s. She simply hates the sheer size of the evo (and I don't really blame her). For me, I just don't see a phone like that lasting me potentially two years (but at least 12-18 months). Want some more power under the hood. Been doing quite a bit of research and the horizon doesn't look terribly promising for Sprint. Of course, any more input is welcome. I'd LOVE to hear that the perfect phone for me is just around the corner!

I did see a picture and read about Samsungs new "flagship" phone comming out in late January and or February. I do not remember the site naturally. It was as thin as an iphone, AMOLED screen, 8MP camera, 1.5GHZ processor. It looks like it will blow the Epic away. Not sure what carrier it will be for though. More than likely they will have it for all, just with a name change and a few body design tweeks.

I deactivated my Evo Sunday in lieu of the new Optimus S. Still using it right now and it is working fantastic. Have not reactivated my Evo yet.

I wish the Optimus had a version with a 5mp camera and LED flash....it looks like the Optimus will be what i get next month when AT&T contract ends. My wife is getting the new Blackberry Style in purple.

I really wonder what is in store for 2011 beyond the htc kngiht or speedy or evo shift or whatever it will be called next. rumors are that LG phone making waves with the tegra 2 processor will be offered to all US carriers but as usual sprint is tight lip so heck everyone make a guess cause no one really knows.

If there's no real leap in technology, then there's no need for a bunch of new phones. People aren't spending what they used to flipping phones. It's not just Sprint, it's the phone makers. Now more than ever, people are willing to wait it out until something really significant happens. The same way people held out on WinXP through Vista and even into Win7, people will hold onto phones.

I also think it makes no sense to jump on a new phone until something huge happens with the Android OS. A millisec faster processor, a 1/2 inch larger screen, and other small increments just aren't enough to bet on any more for the makers or the networks.

I expect at least 2-3 more 4G phones to be put out.
I'd like to see HTC start going with Super LCD. I know it's not as fancy as SAMOLED, but upping the resolution to 960 x 640 would even the playing field.

I agree with that. My time frame is a year out. I upgraded after almost a year with the Moment, to the Evo / Epic which were huge leaps forward. The newer phones now are not that big of a leap yet. A year from now I'm sure we'll see some significantly faster / better phones. Love the 12 months Sprint Premier upgrade!

I'm thinking end of '11 or mid '12 at the earliest. Even if there are some increases in phone features and capabilities, the networks won't be able to give more. Wimax and LTE just won't be there for a couple more years. That's not even considering what the Android OS could add to the equation.

And speaking of LTE, VZW's floating the idea of charging for both how much and how fast you go? What's up with that? One reason cable ISPs haven't been able to get high % of consumers to convert to "boost" speeds is the price. In fact, I think that's the primary reason. I just hope Sprint stays in the value-provider area and doesn't follow these silly things to come.

LTE and Wimax are going to be the news through '11 so I'm just not expecting much. I don't think there's a need, but I'm not expecting much. I also think phonemakers need to slow down the cycle of product introduction because they're simply not going to need to intro so many products now that the real customization is in OS and apps.

Brand notwithstanding, that's basically a Droid Incredible-Lite. Blame the phone makers, not Sprint, for limited options. The reason VZW gets more phone options is that it's a much larger carrier with more buyer potential.

Sprint really only needs to have about 10-15 solid phones with 3-4 low-end and 3-4 top-end options and the rest somewhere in the middle. That's pretty much what they've had and have now. I also hope Sprint skips the WP7 market. Android-compatibles are the future.
