Charging at 90%?

So here I am at a coffee shop. I'm done with my errands but I'm waiting for my phone to FULLY charge (Call it OCD, I don't care) before I leave.

I've been noticing that when I'm charging my phone, my widget shows that it goes up fairly quickly up to 90%. However, it seemingly takes forever for it to to go from 90% to 100%.

Is this just me? Is it the widget (I'm assuming the widget takes the charge information straight from the phone settings)? Is there something inherent in the charge from 90% to 100% that takes so long?

I have had this happen before, and the only thing i've done that has fixed it is to buy a new battery. From experience, the widgets are never exactly on with the actual battery level. The best way i've found to detect your battery life is to push the power button once (to make it go black) and then push the power button again (revealing the pattern/password/locked screen, in my case I have the pattern lock)...Right above the 9 pattern dots on my screen there is a battery % indicator this has always been the best indicator for my batter life.

I believe my widget (Battery Widget) reads the charge information from the following:

Settings -> About phone -> Status -> Battery level

That should be as accurate as it gets, no?

The 'Battery level' in settings shows the same percentage level that the spot I told you about lists. I'm not sure where widgets pull the charge information from, I think it varies depending on the widget...

If you go to Settings > About Phone > Status you can see your battery level as well to check if the widget is displaying the correct percentage. Mine is always spot on.

I don't know why it happens, but I think it's normal. I remember reading somewhere about the ipod classic, that would take around 3 hours to charge 80 percent or something, than an hour for the rest. I don't remember the exact numbers, but it does seem that the last ten or twenty percent does take longer than a lower percentage.

i think this is fairly typical with all electronics. everything i have had with a l-ion battery is like this. usually batterys take 2 hours to charge, so it is something like the first 80% take 45 minutes, and the last 20% take 1.25 hours

I don't think this is normal. I've had this phone for about 9 months now and I've been seeing the same behavior as jsuh84 for the last month or so - It typically takes 10 minutes to charge the battery up an additional 10%, but the last 10% (from 90% to 100%) is starting to take longer than just 10 minutes. These batteries have a finite lifespan (I believe it's based on number of charge cycles), so I just attribute it to the battery starting to crap out. It's bound to happen sooner or later.

Mine charges really quickly. About an average of 10min per 10%

As long as I turn the screen off and not play with it while charging from a wall outlet

do you own a multi meter? you could test the battery with a multi-meter , the exact specs will be printed on the battery, check to the actual meter reading at full charge, you could check voltage and mili
amps

no matter what they say, i think the batterys get a memory, could not hurt to "cycle" thru a few times where you let it die to totally dead battery then when dead ; charge undisturbed, to full charge, do this 2 or 3 cycles, you may see improvement in battery behavior without a disruption to your life

Lithion Ion batteries do not get a memory effect and cycling them will use up some of the cycles. However the battery % meter is just an estimate based off the history of previous cycles so several partial discharges can make it be off and a full discharge/recharge or two can help to recalibrate it.

this may be the way it is designed...do a quick charge, and then when it hits a certain percentage goes into a float charge, which takes longer.

Thats actually how lithium ion charges, the charge curve is not linear, it takes longer the closer to its rated voltage. You just don't usually see it because the battery meter tries to compensate for it.
