Help Can we do a stock reflash of EVO?

Both my g/f and I have an EVO. She's had hers a little longer and tinkered, loaded apps etc. and it crashes and reboots about 3 or 4 times a day. Mostly at random while not even touching the phone. I've only had mine a few weeks and it has not restarted once. She may have bad hardware but we don't know.

So we went into Settings, SD & phone storage, Factory data reset. We ran that option and it cleared the phone for the most part. We thought that would be the fix but her phone still reboots a few times a day.

So is there a way to do an actual reflash of the phone? I assume that means getting the EVO rom (is that right?) and an app to reflash it. We don't want a custom rom or anything, just a stock reflash so it quits crashing. Can we do that or do we have to take it into the Sprint store and wait around for hours?

Thanks

You would have to flash a RUU, but does the phone have root? If not, a factory reset is about as good as it gets. If it's still rebooting after a wipe like that, you should probably take it in. You can try installing something like OS Monitor to see if an app is taking up a lot of the cpu, but I doubt it if you did a wipe. You can also check the temperature. Maybe it's running hot.

Thanks for the info. Her phone does not run hot and I loaded the OS Monitor that you suggested and we don't see anything hogging CPU. Phone is mostly idle... at least while I'm sitting here looking at it. I un-installed easy teather and tinkered with a few settings. If it roboots again tonight I'm going to do the factory restore option again and ensure my g/f knows not to install ANYTHING at all. Not even wall papers and if it still does it I guess we'll talk to sprint about possibly bad hardware.

Read it and weep:
Evo reboot thread

My opinion is that HTC has some serious quality control issues. Even some of the hardware version 3 phones (the latest) exhibit this reboot problem. Some people say it's worse when they are in a weak signal area and the 3G radio must increase transmit power to compensate. Others have it happen only when the GPS is on. Others have it happen totally at random.

Note well their experiences in getting satisfaction depending on whether they went to a Sprint agent, a real company-owned Sprint store, or a repair center.

Good luck to you.

Thank you. I actually did find that reboot thread on my own and read it. Not very comforting at all.
Anyhow we did the factory reset last night on her phone, formatted the SD card, pulled the battery. Everything I could think of to completely reset and start over on this phone. It's completely stock now. I told my g/f to do customizing to it what so ever. No apps, don't even change the background, clock or anything. Hers reboots several times a day so we'll see. If it still does it we'll take it back to sprint.

Last night before all the resetting etc. she sent an sms and then hit the power button up top and it does this weird thing where the screen goes off 99% of the way but you still see an odd glow so she hits the power button again to wake it back up and it just crashes and reboots.

Yeah, I think you have a defective phone, there.

Well after multiple factory resets, SD card formats etc. the phone still rebooted at random through the day.
Took it to sprint and they swapped it out. Now she has hardware version 4. She had 2 prior.
Only sucky thing is we had to pay $37 fee to swap out a defective phone she just bought a few months ago. What a crock. Oh well.

Everybody pays that deductible now, apparently.

Check out the long, long, long rebooting thread. EarlyMon just posted a detailed post about possible causes and it's worth a read. Task Killers, particularly auto-killers, are suspect in a number of these reboot problems. Some Sprint agents have been known to pre-install task killers on phones so you might be holding a ticking time bomb in your hand.

Best luck with your new one Malcolm, and glad they swapped it out instead of arguing! (Bummer on that charge, but that just is what it is.)

I think this wraps it for this one, so I'm closing this thread, and asking everybuddy to continue this sort of thing in the existing reboot thread.

If anyone would like their posts here moved there, drop me a line.
