Ok, so a brief history.. Had the RyanZA root and lag fix on Eclair, but I just flashed FROYO and now I need to root. I don't see ANY of the market root apps, anymore, so I need to do the unleash the beast update.zip thing.

I can't seem to get this file to the correct place!!!!! This is nuts, I'm not an idiot (I don't think).

I download the file and rename to update.zip

wherever I seem to put it (using mass storage usb connect), I get the can't find mnt/internal_sd/update.zip when I click reinstall packages from recovery mode. Here's the thing, I don't see any such directory!

Here's where I've put the file so far to no avail.

1. Just straight click and drag to main F:\
2. Into the external_SD folder
3. Into the SD folder (which I have to show hidden files and folders to view)

I don't have any internal_sd folder anywhere???

It's showing as the F:\ drive on my pc, but the error I get when I try to reinstall packages is: Can't find E:...mnt/internal_sd/update.zip

Can someone please help me so I don't lose my mind????

Thanks!!!!!

the update.zip from unleash the beast will not work with 2.2. you need. there is another program called super one click, google it its on xda, and it will have the correct update.zip. also it has to be on the internal sd card, it definitely wont find it on the external. i dont know why yours doesnt seem to be showing. and did you flash a stock 2.2 rom? if you did any of the custom roms they will already be rooted

honestly man I'm a noob when it comes to this kind of stuff, so thanks. Yes I have a stock rom I guess. Where are the custom ones?

Can you tell me EXACTLY where you see your internal_sd folder?

Is it with all the other folders? ie: DCIM, external_sd, etc..?

I just hook up my usb and click the 3rd option, mass storage. Then I go to windows explorer to view the trees.

the custom roms are perception, cognition, axura, assonance. or those seem to be the most popular, all are on xda. and yes that is the internal sd with all your program files and stuff.

the folder just isn't there. How can I just not have a folder there? should I rename the sd folder to internal_sd? Am I mounting it incorrectly??????

Also, I get errors when I run the above exe file from the zip... so...

honestly my stress level is through the roof right now... so maybe I'll wait for an app to root in the android market. Will that happen soon?

The internal sd folder is not called internal_sd or whatever, on mine it is called "sdcard". and there probably wont be any apps to root 2.2, or any phone, google is the one that has taken them off. you can try and find the update.zip for 2.2 and im sure there are dozens of them on xda. just put it on the internal sd card and make sure the file is named right. i know i named mine update.zip and it woulndt install, i had to take the .zip off, i dont know why

ok thanks, I'll keep trying, but can you point me to a few things on XDA as I'm a TOTAL NOOB...sorry I'm just losing my mind.

1. where exactly I can get a custom rom

2. where I can get any link to an update.zip root for 2.2

THANKS!!

[ROM]Perception Build 8 (CogKernel2, Voodoo5, 1280Mhz OC/UV, tons of tweaks) - xda-developers
Download Cognition!
[ROM] Assonance v4.1 // I Flash, Therefore I Am // **12/8** - xda-developers
[ROM][FROYO]▽▲ AXURA Captivate Edition ▼△[RC 2.1][12/8/10] WE'RE BACK! - xda-developers

if youre going to use one of those you will need to flash back to stock 2.1 using
[STOCK ROM] Odin3 One-Click Downloader and Drivers CAPTIVATE ONLY - xda-developers
you dont master clear but you boot into download mode and click start on the program, it will take you back to stock. then you will need to root 2.1 again and install rom manager and whatever and you can flash a custom rom

Ok, I reflash 2.1 tomorrow then flash one of the above the same as I did stock 2.2 froyo. Last question, of the above custom Roms, which is closest to stock? I kinda like the way it's setup now?

Or should I say, which custom rom above would you recommend? Perception looks good...

Are they all just as easy to flash as the stock odin 2.2 where I just put in download mode and click start? hahahaha

i use perception but a few things have been changed. it runs on stock android, and i think several of those do, ive only used perception and cognition. but you can install touchwiz back on it if you want, you can install the stock android lockscreen also which i like better than the one that comes on the captivate. it has an optional overclock but i dont see a reason for it, if you do get that one you can get the non overclocked version which is what i recommend.

yea if you look in the perception thread at the bottom it says touchwiz gtg and you install that doing the exact same thing you do to install roms with rom manager. at least i think that is touchwiz launcher, im pretty sure it is
