What Tasker profiles is everyone using?? (This thread is NOT for requesting help with profiles)

I'm new to Android (Atrix) and Tasker. I have been on Windows Mobile for years and am trying to repeat some of the functionality I had.

I have been reading all kinds of posts here, but must admit I'm pretty lost on Tasker.

What I need to do is change the SMS tone and make sure the phone isn't silent or on vibrate when plugged into AC.

When it's plugged into AC at night I use a very loud, annoying SMS tone to make sure it wakes me up at night, and then repeat that reminder every 5 minutes until I read the SMS.

In addition, if the phone is on vibrate or silent, I need to cancel that and set the ring volume to the loudest.

Is this something that's relatively straightforward with Tasker or is there an app that will do this?

I have found some apps and they change all the notifications (calendar reminder, etc.) not just the SMS tone. I would like to change just the SMS tone.

Any input would be appreciated.

On a side note, consider enjoying your sleep... unless you're Jack Bauer or Gregory House and you have to get those texts. I'm as addicted to my phone as anyone else, but I like to make a point to save at least 6 or 8 hours a day for myself. ;)

Anyway, this might do it. For context #1 do State = Power (Any, AC, USB... whichever you want). For context #2 do Event = Text Received. You can specify things like sender and content here if you want.

For tasks, set your first one to put Notification Volume at the loudest. Set the second task for alert ->Notification Sound, and select your sound.

Hopefully that points you in the right direction. If you need to do some tweaking to it I'm sure we can figure it out.

Edit: You might want to consider adding a "time" context also... if you have this plugged in at the office without a time context it's going to do that annoying sound, even if on vibrate.

I'm dying to know how to do this!

here you go,

state: signal strength -> from 0 to 1 (up to you though)

tasks:
1 - tasker -> wait, 2 minutes
2 - tasker -> if, %CELLSIG < 1
3 - net -> Airplane mode, set on
4 - tasker -> wait, 12 minutes (up to you)
5 - net -> airplane mode, set off

that's it, the signal drops below 10%, tasker waits two minutes, if it is still under 10% it till set airplane mode on otherwise exit the task. It will then switch airplane mode off after 12 minutes. Then it will automatically go back to the start and do it over again (no need to create an actual loop) because cell signal is reported again automatically after airplane mode is off so that brings it back to the start.

hope it works for you :)

I have a similar night profile except mine turns volume down. But what I have found works best for contexts is 1.power, 2.orientation (I use face down) and 3.time

With those 3 together I never accidentally enable the profile and it always comes on when I want it to.

First, thanks and you are right about the rest time. It's really just a couple server down texts that I need to get at night, I would love to ignore the rest. I got a text at 5:00 that was non emergency and from a guy that doesn't pay attention to what he's doing or what time it is. When I travel oversees about 5 times a year, I sometimes get a middle of the night text from someone in the US that doesn't know I'm over there, or doesn't have the concept of time zones. With the texts I have to get, I can probably specify some content.

I think this will be a good one to get my feet wet on. This seems extremely powerful.

If I started building a whole series of profiles to replaced missed call deluxe, profile change, nudnik, etc. Any feel for if I would wind up being better/worse in terms of battery life? Is tasker efficient if you are running a half doze, dozen or even two dozen rules/profiles?

First, you can specify where the text comes from, so if it's one number you could put that as a qualification. Content can be specified also.

Second, Tasker can help battery life a lot if you use the right profiles in the correct way.

For example, it's not advisable to use a location based context via GPS, because GPS is a battery hog. Just thing of what resources each context requires, and whether it hurts/helps battery life.

I have a profile that turns on GPS when I launch programs that need it, and turns it off when I exit them. This helps because I use to leave GPS on after done with Google Maps or whatever, and it drained my battery life. Now I never worry about it. I also have a profile that periodically checks for my home WIFI network, and if it finds it automatically switches to it (that way when I'm home I'm not using 3G, saving battery life.

I use to make my screen brighter during the day because I couldn't see who was calling in direct sunlight, but of course it would be brighter for everything else. I created a profile that does max brightness during the day ONLY when I'm receiving a call.

I also created a profile for when the battery hits 20% that dims the display, cuts screen timeout, and shuts off autosync, which allows me to get a little more use out of the phone (especially if it sits overnight without being plugged in).

Is it possible to do this with emails? I would like to add my office Exchange account and have it alert me to emails from a couple particular senders for when I'm on call. That way, I don't have to keep watching my phone and takes it away from my office iPhone (shivers)

Does anyone have a good profile for data/wifi/wimax management? What I'd basically like my phone to do is as follows:

-If I'm in the presence of my home or work wifi network, connect to that and disconnect any other data connection, like 4G.
-If not, utilize the most basic data connection most of the time
-When I start certain apps that are data intensive, check for 4G. If there is no 4G in the area, use 3G

Anyone have any guidance? I'm a bit of a noob at this -- know enough to do simple profiles, but conditional things are a bit out of my comfort zone, I've learned.

TIA

Well, wifi will automatically shut off your data while it's on. The only way I would know how to do this is by using GPS, but this may seriously drain your battery if tasker is constantly using your gps location.

What i'd do is set a time context (say from when you're usually around the house, or wherever your wifi zone is), and have it repeat every 10 minutes. Then as a task I'd get it to turn on GPS, check for your location, if you're within 30m of your wifi zone, have it turn wifi on, otherwise, turn wifi off, then turn gps off.

This way GPS won't be draining your battery. And it will turn off wifi once you leave that zone!

Thanks for the help and all I can say is "wow!". After playing with Tasker tonight and creating three profiles, I am getting a hang of it and starting to see how powerful it is.

With a little time, I can see this replacing my Missed Call Deluxe app, profile switching app (can't remember name) and some others. This is powerful.

On my server down alert, I use my own annoying ringtone, but when I tried to setup another profile for my non-server down SMS's, I couldn't find the Standard Android ringtones. Is it possible to access these for an notification alert?

I have been developing a "tasker for dummies" on my blog over the last couple of weeks. I will be updating it as new ideas come to me. I have profiles for the next week lined up. Check it out at dbilliter.blotspot.com

I have a lot of experience with tasker and if you want some help with that blog let me know. I have a lot of profiles I haven't posted here and a lot I have. I started this post with some basics and have got a lot of ideas and grown them which is what I wanted out of this thread.

I'm having a little bit of trouble with 2 profiles from the wiki, the Periodic Data Check (Juicedefender Replacement) and the Wifi Automator, linked below

Periodic Data Check (Juicedefender Replacement) - Tasker Wiki

Wifi Automator - Tasker Wiki

If I import them as is, then the wifi doesnt turn off when the screen is off. So I added Stop if screenstate off to the wifi starter task in the wifi-automator task, but it doesnt always work. It will turn the wifi off maybe 70/80% of the time, but not always.
Is there a better way to make them work together? any pointers would be much appreciated

Just an FYI you mixed up a letter in your Blog Web Address. Instead of Blotspot I believe it should be Blogspot. At least that is where I found your blog. I like some of the profiles you have created. I think they are ones I might be able to use or that my dad might be able to use too. He is new to Tasker and is hooked.

For other posters here is the direct link to dbilliter's blog. From the Mind of DB

Can't you just use the standard Wifi power policy? (Settings>Wireless&Networks>WiFiSettings>Menu>Advanced and change the appropriate option)

Using GPS to look for your house in order to use wifi is a huge battery hog. I use a combination of two profiles. The first is the "Wifi near" context with my home SSID, and the task is to turn wifi on if it finds it. This will periodically toggle wifi on to search for my home network. If it finds it, it will turn wifi on. However, wifi will not stay on with this profile alone, so I created this second profile:

The context is "Wifi Connected" to my home SSID. The two tasks are "Wifi set to on" and "Variable set %HOMEWIFI to 1". The end tasks are "Variable Clear %HOMEWIFI", "Wait 5 minutes", and "Wifi set to off".

This turns wifi off if the home SSID is missing for over five minutes. I do this so it doesn't turn it off if I just run out to my car and it looses the signal temporarily. This should take care of your wifi issue (and 4G will toggle off if Wifi is on). I don't know how to toggle between 4G and 3G.

More problems with phones? There is an app killer that is supposed to work in froyo.

Maybe there is a different route to do what I'm trying to do.

When the connects to bluetooth in my car, I want the Sirius App to start and volume to raise. Upon leaving kill the Sirius app and lower the volume.

Right now when I connect to BT, music app opens by default along with Sirius. Upon exiting I have to manually kill Sirius.

Any ideas?

Pre Froyo I did the same thing, but with Slacker instead of Sirius. You can't do it anymore. Android 2.2+ you just can't do it, and there currently is no work around.
