create wifi hotspot with phone WITHOUT ROOT

Quicksettings (by Sergej Shafaranka) will also do it. Select Settings button -> Customize, and then scroll down to the bottom and drag the WiFi HotSpot feature up into the visible functions. After that just select "WiFi Hotspot" and set it up.

Quick Settings has lots of other great functionality too, including typical settings stuff, flashlight, power usage monitor, etc.

SuperBox will do it. Open it up and look under battery saver/settings and you can activate wifi hotspot.

I did that and it works but it always says limited or no connectivity. The signal is good but it keeps saying that. I hit repair and it says it has something to do with the IP address starting with 169***. How do I correct this. My phone is not rooted and I pulled up the IP address on my laptop and that wasnt it. Also I tried to connect to someone elses laptop and it gave him the same message. Please help I will pay you.

I don't know about Virgin Mobile but Sprint released a software update ("ZVD") which closed the OS loophole that had let apps like "QuickSettings" give you free Hotspot. Now you have to root the LG Optimus S in order to get free hotspot capability.

I rooted my droid 2.2.1. I still cant figure out how to fix the limited or no connectivity for the hotspot. it says it has problems with the ip address
