Just caught wind of this and thought I'd pass it on. I can see some others have talked about the program and this article also includes instructions on how to securely install on a rooted phone.

I suppose developers expect super-mega-boom of Android users in the coming year. Otherwise how do you explain free lifetime offer, which obviously helps them beta-test their system.

I have it on my phone, and I really like it. Not only will it help you locate your phone, wipe the SD card clear, and do your taxes for free (just kidding about the last point) if your phone is ever lost, but you can back up contacts, call logs, and SMSs and lock your phone at will. What I like about the lock feature is that it consists of a six-digit PIN vs other's four-digit PIN.

Occasionally, I will have to leave my phone on my desk at work. The guys in my department are real jokers (deleting contacts on phones that are left alone, stealing contact info, changing wallpapers, or changing all of your contacts to 976 numbers), so EVERYONE has to lock their phone if they walk away.

I NEVER worry. I just lock my phone and walk away. The guys have yet to crack the PIN I use for WaveSecure, but since I change it at random intervals, the guys have no chance.

I recommend this app to everyone, especially while it's still free!

This is the main reason I have not used this application. Many have complained about the surprise they receive when they get their bill and it shows that they have been charged for numerous international text messages associated with this app.

Cheewee - If you are a developer....what is the root cause behind this issue. Are you aware and is there anything that can be done to avoid this issue? I want to use Wave Secure but this is a BIG drawback.

WaveSecure is a software that is installed on your phone. Just like any other software, WaveSecure is removed from your phone when the phone is hard reset and you cannot perform remote functions.

However, upon hard reset, your data is also erased and cannot get into malicious hands and (hopefully) you have a backup on your data on the server, which you can restore to your new phone

That said, we are working on solutions to make WaveSecure hard reset proof, when it is part of the ROM. We have released a version of the Android application that will persist the activation state, lock state, users' PIN etc and the phone can be tracked even after the hard reset.

But it is still possible to get past your application. If the phone has USB debugging option turned on, one can flash custom recovery image onto the phone, then boot into recovery mode and have root access to all data.

So, IMHO, it is not a 100% protection and there never will be.

The lock screen can be bypassed by hitting the home key. Although it does re-lock after a few seconds. I have a task killer application that can kill the process and then the lock screen doesn't show up anymore. If someone was quick enough and/or knew what they were doing they can bypass this easily.

I am also using Wavesecure. Great app, works as advertised. I tested it and locked my phone with a custom message and it worked within a couple minutes. Couldn't be easier.

Anyone having issue with this and Handscent? It is sending the configuration SMSs, but nothing is changin on my phone outside the remote locking ability.

Hi mjschmidt,
You will need to check with your telco if they charge for international text (SMS). You will only receive SMS commands when you try out the different functions using the WaveSecure website.

On a separate note, we've set up SMS gateways in the US and UK so there should be no charge for them.

Hi sbutch6969,
Whether you are charged additional for international text messages depends on your plan with your telco. For example, I don't get charged for incoming text even when I am roaming overseas.

That said, you will only get international text from WaveSecure when you use the site to issue commands (lock, locate, wipe) to your phone. Despite offering this service for free now, we try to address the issue of users incurring charges. We've since set up SMS gateways in US and UK.

Offering the service internationally, it is impossible for us to cover every single countries. That said, we will review the situation and if it makes sense for us to deploy local SMS gateways, we will.

No one? Guess there is no difference...
