My last phone could say the name of the person calling you in between rings in a "microsoft sam" kind of voice. I really miss having that, not having to look at the phone, you can screen calls that way. It would obviously only be able to say the name however you put it in your contacts.

Very good idea and I'd have to second that. I'd rather have it for SMS though since I don't do a lot of calling.

That would be cool to have that option for both. For SMS' i think it can get annoying if your having a conversation back and forth. Maybe just do it on the first text you get from that person.

Spelling out the phone number if the person is not in your contacts I dont think will be a good idea.

Or, you can also just give people specific ringtones, pretty much acheives the same effect.

Or, you can use the built-in sound recorder to record yourself (or someone else) saying their callers name and select that track as the ringtone, Again, it achieves the same end.

I've thought about doing that, recording my friends saying their name, or something really short, and using that as their ringtone.

I like my ringtone to be basic and the same for everyone. Kinda hard to have 50 different ringtones that are all basic.

The problem with just having someone's name being repeated is that you wont always hear it and that involves you having to record each persons name, no thanks.

Strike that, the "built-in sound recorder" is actually exclusively for creating voice notes to send in an SMS. I thought I had found some undiscovered app when using AnyCut to make shortcuts to my desktop. Oops.

True, That's why I just do mine as groups. Like family members all have one ringtone, my friends in-town have one, my theatre company peeps have another, and my out-of town friends have another. I set up a default ring for folks not in my address book, and that rolls over to whoever I don't set up a ring for.

So, when my phone rings, I can at least tell which group the person is from.

I can think of a lot of reasons why I would definitely not want my incoming calls announced like that. Does everyone at the restaurant need to know that my Mom is calling me? Wouldn't it kill the mood if you're in an intimate moment and all of a sudden your phone goes "Call from...Grandma!" ?:D

Haha...i see what your saying, but i never had that problem because it would ring normally, and AFTER the first ring cycle it will just say "John Smith". So if i was in a situation where it could be embarrassing my phone would either be on silent already or i would have enough time to silence it.

Maybe I am the only person who liked that feature. My friends always got a kick out of it too.

I have tried out several apps from the market which attempt to do this... and so far I have found none of them work that well... One major annoyance is when you get a 2nd line calling and you're already on the phone, the called id speaks loudly through the speakerphone even though you're on a call.... 2nd annoyance is if the app uses the default TTS ability of the phone.. it create a rather scary voice which announces your callers... which has frightened people around me many times.... and is embarrassing...

Can someone please make a simple app which announces with a pleasant voice the called id and SMS name id just like any 'classic' VZW LG phone? This feature has been around for years... why can't we make it work right on a Smartphone with so many great developers out there....? I'd be willing to pay for one that work right.

Before the ringtone starts..... say
Caller id: Call from <speak user's address book name - or phone# if not identified>
SMS id: Message from <speak user's address book name - or phone# if not identified>

Don't speak AT ALL if I'm already on a call!!!
Would be nice to have the option to choose how many times caller's name is repeated...

Is this so much to ask for? Thank everyone who's pushing for this and hope we find a developer to step up to the task soon!

I agree with you, I used to have a Nokia that did this and have become so used to it over the last three years and now with this Iphone4 you would think that they had at least this option if not a better one. The more you pay the less you get.
