Root How easy will Rooting be?

Since the Droid 4 has a locked bootloader, will there be any difficulty "unlocking" this phone to make it open to custom roms and so on?

I'm coming straight from the LG Ally which had no such issue, and I'd definitely miss having root if I were to upgrade to the D4.

I had a D2 (well, still have) with a locked bootloader. You will probably be able to root it and load custom roms, but you will be limited in updating your kernel and radios.

bounty for decrypting the boot loader anyone?

We could try to brute force it with a distributed computing system over bonic. I could get two i7 systems and bring online some old xeon units to help. Hell I might even order up some parts and build a few servers just to speed up a crack.

Ain't gonna happen. There have been folks over at XDA trying this since the Droid X came out with no luck (and there are some seriously brilliant developers and hackers over there). I know they got through the Bionic, but I think moto messed up on that one. The only other encrypted bootloaders that have been successfully unlocked are where the manufacturers have allowed it.

The real question is how long after it is rooted that we can get the stock rom with non root ready for recovery.

Coming from the original Droid I wonder how will flashing roms be different on this device? I know that with the bootloader locked there will be no custom kernels. However I really liked the bios like flash options that were just easy.

Will we be able to flash without actually booting into the os? I really liked how similar the process was to working in a bios the fact that it was all txt based and outside of the os made me feel all safe and happy.

i bet you need a bootstrapper app like the droid x... i dont need a rom though, unless its ics, cuz i can customize my installation with ti backup. im not afraid of bricking my phone...

I'm not an expert on the technical process of rooting, but it's my impression that because this device ships with Android 2.3.6 it may be some time before it is rooted. I believe most of the current Motorola root methods require a downgrade to 2.3.5 in order to successfully execute an exploit to obtain root.

The above is based entirely on browsing Google for a bit, I would like nothing more than to be incorrect.

I picked one up, have not attempted to root it yet using any of the current methods.

Looks like he met the $200 goal, and has already released the root.

Calls the bounty experiment failed, but I think it's too soon to call it failed. I still donated $5 to the guy, and left a thank you note for him. Hopefully others follow suit to show that the Android using community still does care and appreciate people like Dan. :)

ikd if he does bootloaders... so far i think they need someone like koush from cyanogen/rom manager to unlock it... i bet if you ask him on his twitter page and send him some dough it might be done like the droid x. hes a bit busy with cm9 rite now but when we get our ota ics update we will probably have a unlock for the bootloader at that point. you need to tet the unlock from somewhere cuz some of these files are closed source(inc h/w drivers to cook a rom)
his links are here asking couldn't hurt... especially after og droid wont get cm9...
