Verizon Pre-order, Release date, and speculation thread

Well, I live in the sticks about 200 miles north of you, so no 4G here yet. But (and I don't mean to spark a flaming contest, just my experience speaking here) Verizon has proven, for me, to be the "only" carrier in my area with reasonably solid service. All the others around here have dropped calls, dead spots, etc. Remember the days when people had to go outside just to use their cell phones? I had to buy a cell booster here just so I don't have those problems at home. So love 'em or not, they are the 'one' I use.

My speculation would be that has something to do with the bloatware Verizon will load up on it. Even though the hardware may be virtually the same, the software packages the carriers shove into the phones will differ. Verizon might be working on something that has been problematic, and they haven't sorted it out yet. Or I suppose it could have something to do with the specific CDMA frequency bands Verizon uses. As I understand it those do very across carriers to some degree.

don't forget the Verizon logo stamped on it.

And unfortunately they know that.

I was with AT&T for four years and put up with the dropped calls and randomly slow 3G. A police officer called me in the middle of the night last December to tell me my dad had a heart attack and the call dropped in mid sentence before he could tell me if he was alive or dead. I never want that to happen again, so I'll put up with VZW's higher rates and crappy CS...

Jailbreaking voids your warranty with Apple (I'm an ex Iphone jailbreaker:D). I always un-jailbroke my Iphone before going in for a warranty reason. While I don't believe in it.... you are modifying there software and therefore voids your warranty.

No reason to fret.... Dev's will find a solution to keep your warranty. Just be patient to root until a method has been found;)

Nope, Apple no longer voids warranties for jailbreaking. They stopped doing that in 2010, I think - mainly because it's next to impossible to cause a hardware failure from a jailbreak. I may be hallucinating, but I think Congress actually had a say in this.

There it is. Because at the end of the day, it is a phone first, and we want it to work. :)

How did your dad fare? I hope he is OK.

i haven't had an Iphone since the 3g... so I am not up to speed:D

No need to worry.. with a little time we will be able to flash the GS3 to our hearts content without warranty worry;)

I am really looking forward to this as stock JB really kicks but on my Gnex!!!!!

If I may stray a bit off the path here (shocker - no one has ever done that! )

:)

One of my big beefs with ICS is its meddling with USB Mass Storage, and essentially blocking the USB transfer to your PC of any files "it deems" not to be media or photo related. I just wondered which direction that went in Jellybean, since you have one in hand? Any chance of a reversal on that (stupid) development idea?

I don't think you'll get any arguments. Even those with other carriers generally agree that from coast to coast VZ has the best service.

He didn't make it. /debbiedowner

I want this phone now. And every time my iPhone keyboard screws up due to being unresponsive or autocorrects a real word to another word, I want to throw it into my grill and crank the propane.

It's VZW.... they do things when THEY want and at the speed THEY want!!;) When you have the biggest and best network... you can do things like this:(

I think they are just fixing bugs while integrating Bing into it. :dong:

I second this question, and apologize for the OT additive ... is there a workaround for this in ICS yet? It's my main gripe of the Nexus, and a main reason why I'm so anxious to get the S3 for the ability to once again use a card I can just rip out and stick in a reader.

I believe I saw someone else claim they used an app to make their nexus a ftp server, then logged onto it from their computer to drag/drop files over wifi. Should be workable.

Wait what? Im on an Incredible running 2.3.4 and when I plug my phone into my computer it gives me 4 options, one of which lets me use my phone like a hard drive (as an aside, unplugging my phone from my computer has like a 50% chance of deleting a random number of applications stored on my sd card). Will I not be able to do this with the S III?

Can I transfer via Bluetooth?

I just want an easy way of throwing books on my phone :(

EDIT: As for the delay, I wouldn't be surprised if Verizon is stockpiling phones so that they have enough phones to cover pre-orders and have enough to stock stores with more than 5 phones.

There may be more bloat than on other carriers, but they're not throwing their logo on the front of the phone or anything.

Per Android Authority

Similarly [referring to Apple and their control over the iPhone], Samsung must have realized somewhere along the way that when it comes to its flagship Android handset – if not all smartphone it creates – it shouldn’t have to continue to modify the design in order to please carriers. Even carrier markings are not available on the front side of the phone, which is another win for Samsung.

Did you ever happen to pop into the epic Galaxy Nexus Pre-Release Thread? We had the most euphoric highs and manic lows I have ever seen in a forum. People vowed to leave and never come back... and were back the next day for more (we ARE a pretty irresistible bunch, ya know ;) ). A social psychologist could study that thread for years, picking it apart and learning all about human interactions under a variety of stress levels.

So a little lapse in this thread's excitement can not only be expected, it should be enjoyed - it'll get very busy in here just before everyone gets their SGS3s and it closes forever

Ohhhh the good ole droid incredible days. Now those were some times to remember. This doesn't quite rival that thread but this has been more enjoyable then the galaxy nexus threads as I was all in that one since I'm using that phone currently. It will be sad once the phone comes. This thread will go away as the others did. :(

And yes I live close to JJ's by Cincy.

It happens man. We will all get a new girlfriend and will be hanging out with her too much to talk to our friends.

Then when we get tired of our girlfriend and know a break up in inevitable, we go back to our friends :)

See you all in two years ;)

A friend recommended an app called "AirDroid" to me. While it can't read the external SD card on the S3 (yet), it can transfer files to the internal memory via web browser. It's an interesting app. You should check it out with your GNex and see if it's a viable workaround for you.
