Not Sure If I Made The Right Choice With X10

Hi,

After owning an iPhone for the last 15 months I fancied a change. I looked at the Nokia N900 and the Xperia X10. After reading a few reviews on the X10 and really liking the look and shape of the phone I chose this over the N900. I recieved the phone on Tuesday and although I have only had it 2 days I am a little frustrated with it.
I hate the way it hasnt got multi-touch (but I could live with that and no doubt get used to the fact it hasn't got it).
The keyboard is awful. It never seems to register that I'm pressing the letter 'A'. Half the texts I get back off people say one word......'WHAT?????'
The speaker volume is way to quiet. If there is any noise around me and I'm on a call I can never hear the other person.
Wifi sometimes picks up and sometimes doesn't (if I'm at home it sometimes doesn't connect to the wifi and leaves me on GPRS, this can even be when I'm sat right next to the router).
The camera quality just isn't all that good. My iPhone seems on par with it.

The look of the phone and design are superb. It feels great in my hand and fits nicely in my pocket but apart from that I'm struggling to see any good points about (not saying that there isn't any BTW).
I'm considering phoning O2 up today and just cancelling the whole thing and then going after the Nokia N900. Bulkier yes, but has the potential to be an awesome phone.

If there is anything I'm missing about the X10 that you may think I might have missed that will make me realise that this is an awesome phone then please feel free to comment.

I hope I haven't bored you all with my whinge.

Regards,

The only suggestion I can make for you is the keyboard part. Try a different keyboard!! I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND installing the HTC Keyboard.

Your other issues like the Wifi and stuff, I won't be able to know since I haven't gotten my X10. Also, a 8.1mp camera is on par with a 3.2mp camera? You gotta be kidding.. I've seen a lot of pics on the net and it was loads better than the iphone. Try to take pictures day time. Night time will suffer as for all phones. Hopefully you can continue to enjoy the X10.

Can't argue with your comments except for the camera, which I find good.

I'm gonna wait until O2 have the Desire then try and swap.

Maybe I'm just being fussy with the camera but the rest has really shot this phone down. The upgrade may help but I'm just not prepared to wait until then in the hope it does sort it out. Just phoned O2 and got my returns sorted. So its a bye bye to the X10. Lovely looking phone but with too many problems (but I hope for all other users this can be sorted and the X10 becomes a decent phone).

Can I ask how much hassle that was with O2 and what phone have you gone for instesd?

No hassle at all. The guy I dealt with was spot on and gave me a returns reference and address no problem. Told me in 5 days time they will start to close down my account. I'm going to go and get the Nokia N900 (O2 don't stock it so off to Carphone Warehouse I go). Again I will have 14 days to see if I like it (I bloody hope I do lol). If not then will return it and go back to an iPhone (maybe shouldn't have sold mine so quickly).

The N900 isn't the best looking phone in the world but is completely free and easy. Stereo speakers and a different OS (maemo). Works off linux so its a hackers dream :)

In addition to the HTC keyboard mentioned above there is also "Better Keyboard" on the android market. It does cost $3 and I know you shouldn't have to pay to fix what is a core component of the phone but it is s huge improvement on the included keyboards and in my opinion better than the HTC one

I also came from an iPhone and am not really missing the lack of multi touch. I tended to double tap to zoom on my iPhone and the X10 normally gets the zooming right on web pages all by itself

As for going onto the mameo, you think you had problems with the X10, you wait until you try the Nokia, I think you will find it far worse.

Good point, the N900 is not for the average consumer IMHO. A developer's wet dream no doubt, with unparalleled openness to hack whatever they want, but if all you want is a smartphone with apps, then...

Exactly.. Most people bought the N900 because its Nokia's most expensive phone at the moment and they think Nokia is a branded company. But really they dont know the features of the N900. In fact Nokia themselves said that it is not targeted for mass consumers but rather for hackers. I've tried my friends N900 and all I can say that is terribly ugly and difficult to use. I really cant recommend it to anyone except for those who spend all their time hacking and programming stuff.

Is multi-touch really a must on a touch screen phone? I don't mean to sound offensive to anyone, but with MT it does hinder your ability to use your phone with one hand, and I'm sure there are ways to make one handed operation of the phone just as good as MT.

Just my 2p

Coming from someone who never owned a modern TS phone, but is planning to soon (htc desire), from what i've tried, MT is great and natural way of zooming. the best one.

Also, lack of DT will make many new games and apps that are bound to be released unusable.

MT/DT does not hinder one-handed operation in any way because you can just NOT USE IT. there is always double-tap if you prefer that.

It's a fiasco SE decided to go with the cheapest possible solution for TS, giving no thought to the future. By the way i see how strong their advertisement is in the media (in europe) i'm pretty sure x10 will be a relative sucess, but a lot of people will stear away from SE when they learn about all the negative things.

You make a few strong points, so I rest my case

Hopefully SE will follow up the X10 and build on the relative failures from the phone.

I'm sure they will, because i do not think another X2 can happen to them.

I have been wanting X10 for a loong time, ever since the first leaks. Mediascape is amazing, THE BEST media program i have seen on any phone so far, and i'm pretty certain it will remain so for some time.
Timescape on the other hand is pontless to some degree (for some services) because it's only for viewing (appart from status updates). It's a fancy social notifications app.
Design is in my opinion the best in any phone, android or otherwise.
Camera is better than on any other android phone.

Basically, those that know what they want from their phone and have no problems with it's shortcoming will be getting a great phone, but SE should have admited some of those shortcomings in the begining, not on the launch day.

Also, i'm pretty certain mediascape, being just an application, will be ported to other android phones (desire) via xda pretty soon.

And as for the OP, most of your problems are of software nature, and i'm sure SE will correct them in the future. Some of them, as suggested, you can also fix yourself (keyboard). Play with it it!

No it is not a must. We don't have the ******ed iPhone Safari browser where multitouch is needed because the text doesn't word wrap to your zoom like it does on Android. Android has a smarter and better browser...double tapping is all you need for most sites.

I've had multitouch since around September on my G1. Didn't use it much then, don't use it much now on the N1.

I have not owned a iphone before so I don't know the difference but I used to own Nokia N82 with a 5mp camera before switching to X10 and definitely X10 can't beat it in term of image quality. So what is so great about the 8.1mp camera SE boost about? And even worst there is no auto flash at all and I still exploring the phone hoping my conclusion is wrong!

Be careful about buying in a store, you get 14 days when you order over the phone or web due to UK distance selling laws.

Look like a minefield, if its a new contract, you have to completely cancel and start again, within 14 days. If you are upgrading, no chance of anything, on O2 anyway! Could be reading wrong though.

Always ask them the questions, and if they say all is good, make sure they show you on the contract where it states, or get it in writing, a short note signed by the manager shouldnt be a deal breaker
